2020-2021 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

(6) Ohio State
The Buckeyes have the widest range of any Big Ten team between their floor and ceiling, in my opinion. The 2020-2021 edition of Ohio State basketball could win several games in the NCAA Tournament and compete at the very top of the Big Ten if everyone can stay healthy. That same group could also struggle mightily and need to scratch and claw just to get into the NCAA Tournament if key contributors don’t bounce back from some pretty serious injuries.

Kyle Young (appendix, ankle), Musa Jallow (ankle), Justice Sueing (foot), and Seth Towns (knee) all have had serious injuries in the past calendar year, with all but Young needing surgery during the offseason to address them.

If the Buckeyes stay healthy, Chris Holtmann has his most talented team since coming to Columbus. If not, the load will fall on guys like CJ Walker and E.J. Liddell to step up in their absence.

If healthy & there are no personnel losses, I think this OSU team could make the Final Four. There is plenty of talent, depth and experience. The Buckeyes have a very diverse blend of scorers and contributors, and can match up against just about anything. I like their chances at a deep run this season.

I dunno, I think our shooting and our interior play figure to be a bit iffy. Towns would have helped in both areas, especially shooting, but I am skeptical that he is a factor this season. On top of that, Holtmann says this group needs a lot of work on D.

But it is probably gonna be a weird, sloppy, and erratic season for a lot of teams. Really difficult to predict much of anything.

“I don't think there's any question,” Holtmann said. “I don't think there's any question that we are a work in progress more than, really, in any of our four years here together.”

The three wild cards also exist in Seth Towns, Musa Jallow and Meechie Johnson.

Just sayin': With the "three wild cards" the work in progress could very well last the entire season.

Well shoot, wanted to watch this tonight. But we've got a full season ahead and no reason to play this game and risk an outbreak on our team. Good thing about basketball unlike football is that there's plenty of games and a cancelation isn't such a big deal (unless it keeps happening frequently).

The Ohio State Buckeyes now sit at 4-0 on this young, and abnormal season. Given the way the season has gone, it is getting to the point where some conclusions can be drawn, and we are seeing where this team is, and what needs to happen to get them to where they want to be.

What is very clear right now that not only is EJ Liddell the heart and soul of this Ohio State team, but he is also their best player. Averaging 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting 54 percent from the floor, Liddell is just the engine that drives this team.

He’s undersized, but he is as tough as nails, he is a leader, and he brings that winning DNA to the floor. Ohio State is going to go as far as Liddell takes them.

After Liddell, Justice Sueing and Dwayne Washington Jr have been the bright spots. On a team that isn’t exactly flush with quality shooting, Washington is 41 percent from three, and also taken care of the basketball.

Sueing has been the most consistent wing scorer for OSU. He is a capable outside shooter, a good slasher, and then also a versatile defender. While he isn’t a “star”, Sueing is a star in his role and a good second or third option on a solid basketball team.

Now the question becomes, can this core group lead OSU to near the top of the best league in basketball?

Right now, I do have some doubts. Kyle Young kind of is who he is, a good fifth option. Justin Ahrens is a one-dimensional guy right now who is only in to shoot, but doesn’t bring much else, and then while C.J. Walker is a good player, he lacks the dynamism to be someone who carries a team against top competition.

Disagree with the info on Kyle Young in that article. EJ is the MVP and best player no doubt but Kyle Young, while not relied on to score or be the lock down defender, is the heart of the team. They feed off his energy and effort and he's an outstanding rebounder who does the little things and is always around the ball under the hoop. This team is chock full of role players with some talent boosting them in those roles. I dont even see EJ as a "star" player he's just really good at being EJ and right now Coach Holt has them buying in to those roles and they are playing them with a ton of energy and effort. All you can ask

I agree with everything you say except this: EJ Liddell is a star player. Unquestionably.
