OHIO STATE HOOPS NOTEBOOK: SETH TOWNS AND MUSA JALLOW REMAIN LIMITED, SCHEDULE NEARING COMPLETION, “VERY FEW” CORONAVIRUS INTERRUPTIONS

SCHEDULE NEARING COMPLETION...AGAIN

Ohio State already went through this once. All the way back in early May, the team released its out-of-conference slate, which featured a trip to the Bahamas as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis and eight other games.

It was settled. Until it wasn’t.

The coronavirus pandemic led to the NCAA cutting the maximum number of allowable games down to 27, so the Buckeyes had to cut several opponents – mostly home games against low-major and mid-major opponents – from their schedule. Then, due to sky-high COVID-19 positivity rates in South Dakota and a recommended 14-day quarantine for anyone who travels there from Ohio, they pulled out of the Sioux Falls-based Crossroads Classic. Jim Borchers, Ohio State football’s team physician, talked to Holtmann last week and the decision to leave it was made.

“We had been tracking that pretty closely,” said Holtmann, referring to the three-game Crossroads Classic where his team would have opened the season against Memphis on Nov. 25. “It was a tournament we really wanted to play in. That's kind of why we stayed in it as long as we did.”

Instead of preparing to travel to South Dakota, Holtmann is working to finalize Ohio State’s 2020-21 non-conference schedule that suddenly doesn’t have a season-opener. Estimating he’s spending 70 percent of his workdays and nights on scheduling right now, he says he hopes to have it finished in the next week or two.

“We're close on a couple games, but we haven't had the finishing touch on the schedule yet,” he said.

Holtmann intends to play in an exempt event – which would allow Ohio State to play 27 total games instead of a maximum of 25 games without it – but does not have the details on it yet. The event could take place in Columbus, he said.

Ohio State, per its official schedule page, has games lined up with Morehead State (Dec. 2, home), Alabama A&M (Dec. 5, home), Notre Dame (Dec. 8, road) and North Carolina (Dec. 19, Cleveland). Provided the Big Ten releases a 20-game conference schedule in the near future, the Buckeyes will fill out their schedule with a yet-to-be-determined exempt event where they’ll play three games.

1) Who is healthy and who isn’t?
usa_today_14086909.jpg

This isn’t intended to cause a panic, so we will start with the positives here:

This is the most talented team Chris Holtmann has had since he became the head coach of the Buckeyes. That is a fact.

Kaleb Wesson’s departure is going to force Ohio State to become more creative on the offensive end, which should help key members of this team progress into the types of players we’ve all thought they were capable of becoming. That is a fact.

The injury concerns that accompany this talented roster could very well wipe away the above two statements, and that is assuming COVID-19 doesn’t bite this team at any point. Also a fact.

Ohio State has four players who are still recovering from various types of surgery in the past year or so. Towns (knee), Justice Sueing (foot), Musa Jallow (ankle), and Kyle Young (appendectomy), have all gone under the knife recently, and we won’t know their exact status until we get closer to Dec. 2. In the case of Young, he is almost certainly recovered from getting his appendix out by now, but he also dealt with a nasty high ankle sprain at the end of the season, and he has a history of lower body injuries that have lasted his whole collegiate career.

Holtmann recently said that Jallow and Towns likely won’t be ready to play when Ohio State takes on Morehead State on Dec. 2 (or whenever they play their first game, who really knows at this point).

Sueing, a transfer from Cal who sat out all of last season per the NCAA’s transfer rule, had foot surgery last winter. He is allegedly operating at 100%, but we won’t know for certain how that foot holds up until the real games begin.

Young doesn’t enter the season with one specific injury concern. However, he has sustained serious injuries to both legs the past two seasons, including a high ankle sprain to the right leg and a stress fracture in his left. It seems that he’s healthy right now, and ideally it stays that way. But with his history, he is one to keep an eye on.

If these four guys are feeling good by say, mid-December? Then this a dangerous team. But if any combination of them miss extended time there will be issues, especially in the post.

Chris Holtmann announced on 97.1 FM’s Morning Juice that the Buckeyes will be facing the Illinois State Redbirds on Nov. 25 as part of a four-team MTE (multi-team event).

The other two teams involved have not been announced, nor has the location. With the addition of this tournament, Ohio State’s nonconference schedule will have seven games and looks like this:
  • Illinois State (location TBD) - Nov. 25
  • Second MTE game (opponent and location TBD)
  • Third MTE game (opponent and location TBD)
  • Morehead State (Columbus, OH) - Dec. 2
  • Alabama A&M (Columbus, OH) - Dec. 5
  • Notre Dame (South Bend, IN) - Dec. 8
  • No. 16 North Carolina (Cleveland, OH) - Dec. 19
With these seven games on the books plus 20 conference games which are still to be announced, the Buckeyes are back to the NCAA maximum of 27 games. Holtmann said that he expects the remaining two games to be announced in the next week or so.

Starting the season on 11/25 against an Illinois St. that will probably be pretty dreadful.

But if there's a season where it is senseless to complain about the schedule, it's this one.
Unfortunately the best laid plans had no answer for 2020. I wish it were different, but football didn't even have nonconference games, so I guess I should be grateful that they are playing nonconference hoops games at all.

A week before tipping off the season, Ohio State revealed its 2020-21 men's basketball schedule. Unlike a usual 31-game regular season, NCAA rules mandating fewer games mean it has set up six non-conference games and will participate in a 20-game conference season.

The Buckeyes will open the season at home against Illinois State on Nov. 25. The game will tip off at 2 p.m. and will be shown on ESPN2 or ESPNU. The rest of the non-conference slate begins home contests with UMass-Lowell (Nov. 29, 4 p.m., BTN), Morehead State (Dec. 2, 5 p.m., BTN) and Alabama A&M (Dec. 5, TBD, BTN or BTN+). It also features a trip to South Bend, Indiana, to face Notre Dame in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 8 and a matchup with North Carolina in Cleveland on Dec. 19.

What happened to 7 nonconference games?

NO FANS, NO FAMILIES
Like the football team, Ohio State will not allow family members of players and coaches to attend basketball games. That policy remains in place through the remainder of 2020.

Players got the news last week.

“They were disappointed, but they've moved on here quickly,” Holtmann said. “I hope that at some point that will change and they'll be able to get their parents to come see them play.”

SKULL SESSION: BUCKEYES HAVE BEEN GETTING TO THE QUARTERBACK, JONATHON COOPER IS AMONG THE BIG TEN'S BEST, AND BASKETBALL SEASON BEGINS

BRACKETOLOGY!
It just wouldn't be basketball season without some absurd prognostication, and thankfully I think Joe Lunardi will always be able to deliver in that department.

Behold, the extremely correct bracket:

It looks like Oklahoma and Creighton are on notice.
