How do you guys think this squad would fare against the 06 squad (circa march)?
would be an interesting game. you'd be looking at...
conley/butler/lewis versus walker/carton/muhammad/washington
harris/lighty/cook versus andre and muhammad/washington in 3-guard lineup
oden/hunter versus kaleb/young/liddell
what interests me here is kaleb's outside game. pulling oden away from the basket opened up greg to a foul-a-minute. think you'd have to play kaleb outside because he'd have no shot otherwise. there is where the current team could hurt 06-07. think the oden team would fare better if the game were played late in the season since lighty was much better and could guard young or liddell. hunter was also a good defender. each team going small-ball would be fun to watch with hunter/lighty versus young/liddell. i give the edge there to young/liddell. on the flip side of oden, the current team would have to front and back him... while hoping everyone doesn't go off from range. kaleb guarding oden alone would not be pretty.
i think small forward is a push.
as far as the backcourt goes, i think it's probably most fair to revisit this in march. our view of conley is colored by the part of the season that carton has yet to play. that being said, i'll nonetheless take conley and expect that freshman carton won't become near the floor general that conley was. that sounds like a putdown, but it's more of a compliment to the best point guard ohio state may ever have. i think butler and walker are a push. lewis versus muhammad/washington? i'll take tournament ronny all day long and twice on sunday. however, as with carton, our current 2-guards still get time to develop.
all in all, i take 06-07 by about 6 points. conley and oden were just too good. i trust conley too much to take the other team. however, if kaleb is hitting from outside and gets oden in foul trouble as a result, then it's anyone's game.
