2019-2020 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

Team defense last 4 games has had some holes

Morgan st 39 pt 2nd half
Unc ok they are inept
Psu 74 pts
Minn 84 pts
in time we'll find out whether there is an underlying issue peeking its head, but it's just so hard to tell with a small sample size. the last two games have certainly been underwhelming on defense, though. our 2-point defense has been swiss cheese. you'd like to think that while offense comes and goes, defense remains constant.

my general view of the minny game is that it was primarily a confluence of factors that worked against osu:

1. without our second-leading scorer and best floor-spacer.
2. 8-day layoff.
3. minny making everything, including contested shots.

as far as the third point goes when viewed from the perspective of ohio state's defense, i'm reminded of minny's previous game against iowa. they had by far their worst outing in terms of adjusted offense. no other game comes close. is iowa a good defensive team? is ohio state a bad defensive team? sometimes it just boils down to the basket looking like the eye of a needle one night and looking like a hula hoop the next. i'm not saying that osu couldn't have won had they played (much) better, but i can't help but think that it was simply "one of those nights."

this game should make more sense when we look back on it in a month or so.

19-20's 8-day december layoff produced a 13-point loss to minnesota after dominating wins over unc and psu.

18-19's 10-day december layoff produced a 2-point win over bucknell after solid wins over illinois and minnesota.

17-18's 7-day december layoff produced a 13-point win over a bad app state team after solid/dominating wins over wisconsin and ttun.

edit: looked back at the matta years. most of the season's didn't have a december layoff. starting with the 07-08 season, there were 3 layoff years. each produced a loss returning from the layoff, albeit against good teams. would expect that subpar performances off of a layoff are universal among college basketball.

going forward, maybe ho1tmann tries to set the schedule so that a good opponent is not the first team played after finals. unfortunately, he has no control over big ten scheduling, so the best response might be to schedule a cupcake the week of finals. or maybe he welcomes the adversity.

if i were a serious gambler, i'd scour every schedule and look for games coming off of one team's finals week layoff. i'm sure the sharps already do. analytics predicted an osu margin of victory well above the 7.5 that osu was giving, but analytics certainly don't consider all the variables that the sharps do. fortunately for the professionals, the average gambler also doesn't consider the variables.

I'd supplement 1 by noting that Luther handling the ball more due to Duane's absence is not a particularly good thing. He always looks a just a little bit rushed as a ball handler, like the dude on the dance floor who's always a half-count ahead of the beat. More generally, it seemed like there was a lot more dribbling and less crisp passing in this game than in others.

Uh, yeah, it'd be really cool if we could figure out a way to schedule without having these long breaks in the early season (being out one of our starters doesn't help, either, obvs).

These long lay-offs really seem to do a number on whatever discipline and chemistry Holtmann's teams had built in the season up to that point. The first half tonight was just dreadful, if we'd been playing a team with half a pulse they would have been blowing us out on our home court. We COULD. NOT. STOP. turning it over in the first half, and yet from our 21 turnovers SEMO only got 3 points. We turn it over like that against teams like UK or WVU--or, heck, virtually any B1G team--we will get slaughtered.

Up until the break I think CJ and DJ were fairly even in terms of what they brought to the court in different ways but things are quite suddenly flipping to "please play DJ over CJ" in rather dramatic fashion. thing is, while Duane is out, both still have to play a lot. I can only hope CJ finds his game wherever he left it during those 8 days off.
