How many quick slants did they knock down/have someone besides the Db helping with in the first quarter alone?
LSU would have torn OSU up with that same game plan.

Frustrating that we'll have to wait to see how Meyer handles his staff and then a whole nother offseason before we see if a defense is competently installed and taught.

Noticed while rewatching today that we do way too much defensive line movement pre snap. What I could tell is that they aren't set or are still getting ready when the ball is snapped and end up taking themselves right out of the play. Just let them line up and run your stunts or slants properly and then maybe the linebackers can see where they are going. Just a thought

They're also playing zone behind it so there aren't a massive bunch of holes in the defense when the line fits wrong. They have a mix of the two things that work very well and we are in shambles.

I think we need to do the same thing on Defense that we did with the run game on Saturday. Simplify things!!

The dline is getting beat in the run game which is something we aren't used to seeing at Ohio State. Tackles for loss have gone down dramatically (from what I see) since the earlier part of the season. My view point on Saturday (when I didn't have a fucking B Deck pillar blocking my view) was that Nebraska was running through gaping holes on the interior.

Interesting. My takeaway (but I haven't gotten back to confirm) is that it is not uncommon for this OSU defense to do fine or even make a play on first down and/or second down, just to have that negated by giving up a big gain on the next play. Case in point on the first drive of the game vs. Nebraska--DreMont makes a great play on 2nd and 5, sacking Martinez to make it 3rd and 12. But then the D allows Martinez to scramble for 10 yards, and Frost rolls the dice (and gets it) on 4th and 2. If the defense holds Nebraska to even a respectable result on 3rd and 12, say allowing 5-7 yards, it's probably long enough that Frost doesn't gamble on 4th.

What is Urban Meyer Seeing From the Buckeye Linebackers?
The Ohio State linebackers have been under fire from offenses and outsiders for the past two seasons.
“Why are they so close to the line of scrimmage,” people ask. “If they weren’t so close, they would be able to make more plays.”
Defensive coordinator Greg Schiano heard those criticisms, but likely only from his head coach.
Over the past two games, the Buckeye linebackers haven’t been asked to play up on the line of scrimmage as much as they were before. The results haven’t really been any different defensively, as the OSU defense allowed 42 points to Purdue and 31 to Nebraska.
Missed tackles continue to be an issue as well.
There is a bit of irony in the fact that the Buckeye linebackers have been the healthiest part of the Ohio State defense this season, and yet arguably the most inconsistent as well. The defensive line has missed starters for most of the season, and the secondary has been a mix-and-match M.A.S.H. unit for the last month.
“I thought our defense improved,” Urban Meyer said after the Nebraska win. “Obviously nowhere near we need to be, but they improved. We’re still stop-gapping. That means the lineups continuously keep changing because of injuries. But I think we should have everybody back next week if we don’t get a guy hurt in practice.”
The mention of stop-gapping may be why the Buckeyes aren’t willing to try new faces at linebacker. Perhaps the staff wants to keep things as stable as possible there and then the rest of the defense will come together around them.
And maybe the best options are currently playing right now.
Or maybe they’re just not being coached well enough to be a strength of the team.
“I see improvement,” Meyer said of the linebackers on Monday. “I see a group that was all four — three new starters. Tuf [Borland] was a returning guy, but Baron [Browning] playing and Malik [Harrison] full-time starter, and Pete Werner a first-time starter. So I’m seeing improvement, but we still have far too many missed tackles. We had six or seven tackles for losses that we missed. So that’s what I’ve seen.”

We were spoiled into thinking we could just keep "re-loading" after all those guys leaving early for the NFL every year. it was bound to catch us under the right circumstances. Namely a combination of early entries and injuries. Add in coaches moving on and this years Zach Smith/Urban Meyer drama and you got just too much chaos to easily overcome without a drop off. Progress is being made but it just may not come fast enough this year. Welcome to being a fan.
