2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

I was really impressed with Sheffields game against USC. This was the guy I was expecting to see out of the gate but it took a while. Add Arnette, Okudah, Fuller and Pryor and our DB's will be in good shape. Throw in Wade, Reip and crew and there will be lots of competition for playing time next year.

Next years D will be better. Seriously.

They will have the potential. Not as much DL depth, but Bosa and Young could be a legendary pairing. Waiting to see what Baker (most likely gone) and Jones decide to do when it comes to the draft. Interior DL will probably struggle early if they lose Jones along with Sprinkle and Hill. Although Landers is an impact player already.

Super excited to see the young guys come out and kill it next season.

Count on a scoop and score from BB. Gonna happen before he’s done here.

I think adding Jackson immediately makes the interior Dline better next year.

Break it down from the rear forward.

I absolutely think the secondary can be better. Losing a first rounder in Ward will hurt, sure. But I’ve never been totally confident in Damon A. and Sheff looked much better against USC so to me the combination of him and Okudah look promising. And I liked Webb but I think Pryor has a higher ceiling and is a future star. And Fuller will just improve.

As it has been well documented the LB core was disappointing in ‘17 and the cupboard is STACKED with guys that got valuable reps in Borland, Harrison, etc and many more guys are literally right there in Browning, Werner, etc. And this is no slight to Jones, Hilliard, etc who have talent and absolutely could step up if they pull it together and stay healthy. Hilliard is a guy who I was super excited to land based off his HS film and who made one play in particular during the spring game that reminded me of those skills. To me, he is a LOT like Lattimore in that health has been an issue mainly and he could literally explode if it all comes together. And then there is the possibility of course that Baker returns and takes the next step up in his game as he hasn’t reached his potential IMO. I don’t expect he returns however. Regardless, of the 3 levels of D, the LB group is the easiest to me to project as being better and it could be significantly better by conference play.

So that leaves the DLine which of course will not be nearly as deep but could very well feature the best 2 players getting major minutes together in the Meyer era in Little Bear and The Predator. I’m not saying the best 2 D Lineman in one season at OSU under Meyer I’m saying when looking back at how they do in their NFL careers when people say “wow that ‘18 team had both of those freaks”. And there are a ton of other very talented players, etc and there is still a chance at this posting that Jones returns although doubtful.

So to me, at this point, there is every reason to think the ‘18 squad can be better. I see at as a season where the multiple classes of 4 and 5 star guys pays off which is to say nothing of the sneaky 3 star guy who explode like Harrison could do. Kinda like that kid from New Albany that stepped up and made his mark on the ‘14 NC squad.

Dre’Mont’s decision will ultimately direct my opinion of whether this defense can be better next year.

Dre’Mont is a beast. Having him, while allowing interior guys like Landers/Cornell to stay fresh and rotate is a big deal. The fact Jones can also be a run stopping beast at DE would be huge as well.

I think our schedule next year is actually harder on paper. At MSU and at PSU. Purdue is really taking a step forward under Brohm, and we play there as well. TCU will be a top 12 team when we play them in Dallas as well.

I love Okuduah’s ability and potential...he’ll be a stud. I think Sheffield will be good but he has natural limitations. If Arnette returns he needs to clean up the PI’s and play a little more in control.

While Webb wasn’t the freak athlete we became accustomed too, he was solid. Could be some growing pains early, like we experienced with Fuller this year.

Hopefully Grinch adds some new wrinkles to our defense. For how great they looked at times this year, it was beyond vanilla. We were in press man over 90% of plays, and really didn’t disguise anything. I guess you can do that when you’re so loaded along the D-line, but some additional creativity that forces QB’s to make post snap reads rather than allowing QB’s to make pre-snap decisions with where they are going with ball.

USC didn’t do their homework....otherwise they would’ve emulated nearly every Big 10 team we played that had the QB release the football within a second of taking snap. Having Darnold try and play within the pocket, and make multiple progressions, was certainly a bold move.....
