2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

I heard this rumor of Grinch to the Buckeyes a few weeks ago on a Buckeye podcast. I brushed it off as a rumor and nothing more. But it made sense to bring him up. An Ohio guy(went to Mt. Union and is from Grove City) who can work with DBs and be able to step in once Schiano eventually leaves. Coombs and LJsr don't seem like they're going to ever have a desire to be a HC, and Grinch is young enough to be DC and possibly more down the line...
Also Grinch is probably looking for an eventual pay raise too after being one of the best defensive coaches in his conference yet being one of the most underpaid. This would be a big time hire to set up OSU for the future and continue the current dominance.

Just to put into some perspective how good Grinch has made this Wash St. defense(bare in mind as well, he's doing this with mostly 2 and 3stars for a school that produces few NFL prospects in a state that produces little NCAA D1 talent)

HOW THE COUGS RANK NATIONALLY ON DEFENSE:

+ Total Defense: 11th (275.2, only 17 teams are holding teams under 300 yards)
+ 3rd down conversion percentage defense: 15th (28.1 %)
+ Sacks: 10th (3.40 a game, 17 total)
+ TackleS for loss: 23rd (7.6 per game, 39 total)
+ Passing defense: 7th (146.6 yards per game, only 3 passing TD given up)
+ Scoring defense: 34th (20.2 points per game)
+ Turnovers gained: 6th (12)

Would be a grand slam of a hire

Grinch was looked at to replace Leach if he left WSU - he is a great recruiter as well.
So I guess if he comes here, this will immediately become the story in the Palouse:

It is stupid when he could go from making $800,000 a year (with much less guaranteed) to $2-6M a year (with a lot, if not most, guaranteed). In case you're unaware, there are insurance policies designed specifically for this scenario which are at no/little cost to the kid upfront. Now, if he grades about at early- to mid-second round, then maybe make the jump, but if he's graded at third round or later his best choice is to get the insurance and build himself into a higher draft pick. This ain't selfishness on my part, but rather what's most likely best for Jerome.

This take from 11W seems appropriate to post here:

Players' education always concerns a certain bloc of fans this time of year. You know the type, willing to produce a 10-point PowerPoint as to why a player should stay in school.

If Baker wants to jump, an NFL team will assuredly see a winning formula in its coaching and Baker's athleticism. You might say, "Well, he should come back, shore up his draft stock, and make more money." He could also come back next year and hurt his stock further. He could rupture every ligament in his knee in the third quarter against Tulane an never be the same player again.

It's the type of decision that seems enviable (return to school for "free" or make a couple million dollars, at least) until you sit down and think about the ramifications. It's never as easy as it looks from afar, either.
