2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

Overall I think no matter what we can be just as good as this past seasons defense.

Not as deep up front but the secondary returns 3 of 4 and the LBs can only be an improvement.

I don't expect the 2018 to give up as many 300-400 yard games through the air as this past group. I see them probably being a little more consistent then this past years team

Even Beyond Denzel Ward, First Rounders Will Continue at CB for OSU

Damon-Arnette-Michigan.jpg

Ohio State cornerbacks have been very, very good to the NFL over the last 20 years or so, but they have really ramped it up since Urban Meyer and Kerry Coombs arrived.

Over the last 21 years, the Buckeyes have produced 10 first-round draft picks at cornerback. In the spring, Denzel Ward is expected to make that 11 first rounders.

That would give Coombs five first-round draft picks at cornerback over the last five years. Not only would he be besting the NFL Draft record he set last year, but that number would also be more than any other Big Ten football program over the last 40 years.

Don’t worry, though, Denzel Ward won’t be the last.

Coming into this season, most expected Ward would be ready to leave early, which he is doing. There was also some thought that redshirt sophomores Kendall Sheffield and Damon Arnette could leave as well.

Speaking after the Cotton Bowl win, however, Coombs expects both Sheffield and Arnette to return so that they can continue what is now an ongoing thing at Ohio State.

“No, we’ve had many conversations about that,” he said. “That’s their personal business, but no, every anticipation that I have is that those guys are eager to come back and improve and be first rounders next year.”

Ohio State Football Notebook: ‘I couldn’t be more fired up’

Ohio-State-Football-Notebook.jpg

Those Who Stay

Ohio State was without their top cornerback in the Cotton Bowl when Denzel Ward decided to sit the game out, but the cornerbacks held up pretty well without him.

The collective performances of Damon Arnette, Kendall Sheffield, and Jeff Okudah had Kerry Coombs excited about the future of the Ohio State cornerbacks.

“So, I think to me, I couldn’t be more fired up,” he said. “I’m ready for next year. If we start spring ball tomorrow I’m not going to be disappointed because I’ve got some really good guys coming, and we’re gonna play.”

Then your previous post is insane

It's obviously debatable, but I don't think I'm making a ridiculous statement saying it's the most talented line in school history. Not saying necessarily they will be the best. They might be. That will play out on the field. But when you look at recruiting rankings, where they will be drafted, etc

A line rotation of Bosa, Young, Cooper, Jackson, Vincent, Jones, Togiai, Smith, Garrett, Landers, Cornell is ridiculously talented

What line would you argue is more talented than that?

It's the off season, when hope springs eternal. I said that it was also insane when the season before the 2015 one, people were proclaiming it to be the greatest osu offense ever assembled and would set or break all types of recprds... Reading off names and rankings is nice, but games have to played. And rankings and draft stock don't matter when the season starts. For example: before the season Jerome Baker was named as one of the top 3 best LBs in CAN, as the season went on, he didn't look like that consistently, Kendall Sheffield was supposed to step right in and lock down his side and be one and done, Mr. Sheffield hasn't even needed to come and saybyhatvjes returning because it's an obvious point that he needs a another year of college, this was supposed to be the deepest and most talented Dline in the country, and they underachieved greatly. Like i said, it's insane to make those statements without a game being played, but I get it. It's the off season and we have nothing better to do
