2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

I’ve been doin’ DSA long enough, to know that you’re doin’ something right when you hold the other team to under half their scoring average.

I’ve been watchin’ football long enough to know they’re doin’ something wrong.

As has been said many times, it’s fixable.

I’ve absolutely no idea if it’s reasonable to expect a fix

Some mistakes were made but bottom line is that the D limited the highest scoring Offense in CFB to 26 pts. Thats an average of 6.5 points a Quarter. We can point out weaknesses but the bottom line should be: SCOREBOARD
Absolutely... I was more ticked at the offense during the game than anything. Now? Just glad we won.

Proud of the fight the defense showed though.

That's what I don't get... somethings broke. Fix it.

Safety play is going to get better. It’s been getting better every game. Still think the main problem is just youth. LB play? Yeah not so sure.

That's funny, I see it exactly backwards from the way you said it.

LB's look better as games have gone on, the safety opposite of Fuller just keep doing the same stuff.

I am personally more concerned with that because LB mistakes are a 20ish yard gashing. Safety mistakes are 93 yard TD's.

What's broken is obvious.

Can you get the individuals to fix it this year? I am not so sure.

This

Some men you just can’t reach

Some coaches can’t reach anyone

Whether we have either of those issues is, in my opinion, unknowable from where any of us sit. We’ve seen stuff get fixed before. We’ve also seen years where problems persisted to the bitter end. Sometimes the issues are masked by overmatched opponents. This year, for better or worse, the upcoming opponents at least have sufficient skill that we’ll see whether the problems are getting addressed.

Fuller is pretty good. At LB, Malik has sometimes been good. The floor at LB for the best player is a lot lower.

Pryor flashes at safety, then shows his youth. It's crucial to separate his play from Wint's.

Recruiting at safety was pretty weak for a few years and it shows. Davis is elsewhere, Wint has struggled, Pryor is a second year newbie. The best talent is a probably true frosh who is still acclimating to being a college athlete. I still want to see what Riep can do in time, but again, 2nd year guy with minimal experience.

LB is a concern because of how they take themselves out of the play at times, and that seems to happen across the board. Less so with Malik but he's guilty of that too. They were a lot better against the run this week.

Malik plays fast (and is a freak). He isn't perfect but he flashes a lot.

Tuf wasn't that fast before the injury and is clearly not close to 100%. The problem is Browning still seems to be thinking too much. That's why many of us would like to see what Hilliard can do. He is not without his own mistakes, but his comfort level in the system is apparent compared to Browning.

Just seems the LBs are filling wrong holes when we get gashed. This past week was simply putting a spy on McSorely and leaving him there. Once we put Harrison on that duty, we were pretty good. The Dline eats up enough running lanes that the LBs just have to stay home and follow their assignments. Looking better overall but the misses are big time.

I don't think we've found a safety yet that can read and cut plays off, outside of Fuller that is. I'd love to see Sheffields speed back there ball hawking and running with TE's/Slots. If I were one of the coaches I'd certainly be moving pieces around until I found the answer though. No loyalty over team.

Sure but those 20+ yarders feel like they're happening at a much more frequent clip than the 93 yarders. When your LBs are constantly screwing up, it puts a lot more stress on your Safeties to be perfect. You saw how bad the D was at times last year when we had two competent and experienced safeties AND two out of three experienced LBs. Maybe I'm giving Schiano and Grinch too much credit while giving Davis too little.

Edit: I also should provide the disclaimer that I'm a dummy and that the extent of my football knowledge is screaming at the tv week after week.
