2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

Sparty has been a thorn in our side enough to never count them out. Every year except last year I’ve never taken them too seriously. Who knew the only year I’d be scared to death of playing them was the only year we pummeled them into oblivion.

This 100%. On paper, I think we blow them out if we keep improving at the pace we are at. However, I have felt that way in the past and it hasn't gone so well (see 1998, 2013, 2015). However, the TCU and PSU games were certainly the ones I was most worried about on paper and coming out with W's in those games were huge. I think we match up really well with MSU and scUM's offense, but both teams are always challenges in their own right. The good news is that by that time, the team will have much more experience and hopefully we will have Bosa back at DE. Young is killing it and Cooper has had his moments, but the lack of Bosa hurts. In the meantime, we will be more than fine and keep growing on defense. Really need the LB's to keep coming along...I am wanting to see more and more of Browning and Hilliard out there.

Time for the staff to really take a hard look at how better teams are going to attack. Not that I think the coaches are failing to self scout...if I can see weaknesses you damn well know that book is out.

With offensive coaches like Day and Wilson on the staff it wouldn’t be hard to breakdown what their plan would be with the other teams personnel. It’s just frustrating that the back seven is such a question mark. Less so being undefeated but still concerning none the less.

Just watched the replay again and focused on the linebackers every play. They played pretty well for most of the game, less a few plays where Borland showed his lack of speed.
Harrison was outstanding all game.

Biggest take away-Browning should never line up in the middle. Ever.

Harrison had a phenomenal game, but I need to go back and rewatch for sure. Borland had some pretty forgettable moments and agreed on the bolded...Browning is excellent on the outside but was a square we were trying to fit into a round hole, we just need to figure out a solution on the inside. Borland is not playing like he did last year, not even close....worried he tried to come back too early. Would like to see Hilliard play more inside without a doubt.

If 75-80% of Borland is better than 100% of anyone else that can play Mike in the LB room then it's worrisome.

Likewise, if Pryor is the best the safety room can produce to play alongside Fuller then the rest are a huge concern.

Probably has something to do with Meyer's comments this week about needing more from the younger guys and his dissatisfaction with depth.

My mind is blown with just how some players have difficulty taking a proper angle. As it was pointed out I thought everything considered the linebackers played very well. They tackled the quick stuff to the outside, stop the running back cold, and did a very good job in pass coverage.

I know most will look at McSorley's numbers but I think the game plan was to take away everyone and force mix early to run. Also it's very hard to guard against the quarterback run with this scheme that we play considering all of the man coverage. Only knock I will have is Borland should never be spying anyone because he just cannot keep up and that's okay.

My biggest concern is our coaches ability to know people's limitations.
Borland as a spy, Browning up at the line of scrimmage, and our safeties opposite of Fuller being used as center fielders.

It's obvious we need to flip the safeties positions around and have Fuller strictly as the center fielder. If we are going to spy that's great but it needs to come from one of the outside backers. Then finally Browning's best position is outside.

Which he's shown a willingness to hit so why they dont switch his and Jordan's position is beyond me.

Let Fuller be center field and let Pryor drop in the box. What is so hard about this? Besides Fuller played center field last year and was tremendous at it.

I'm ok with Pryor playing but him being the last line of defense? Absolutely not.

I heard today if you take away the 5 real long plays we are top 10 when it comes to yards per play against. You have someone responsible for 3 of the 5 so get him some help. Pryor can't have the best confidence right now either so help him out.

Because if you put Isaiah closer to the line of scrimmage, he's in one-on-one coverage more often. Is that what you want?

On Borland, I totally agree...looking at the schedule, I just really don't understand why he can't take 2-3 weeks to get healthy. Maybe it is one of those injuries where sitting out really would not help, but I just don't see that being the case. Let Hilliard man the middle for the next couple weeks and see how he does. I feel like Hilliard has earned the PT and we need Borland healthy down the stretch way more than we do right now.

On Pryor, he has had his moments, but is definitely inconsistent. You can see flashes from him, but I am guessing that is about what we would see from the other safeties. That being said, I would like to see Riep and Wade get some time in his spot in the next couple weeks. I have not wrote off Pryor by any means yet, but there needs to be some competition at that spot for sure.

Thats why Wade makes a ton of sense right now... Wade can cover underneath and Fuller can go back to center field. 70+ yard plays are over if we do this

I'm not sure why so many people think inserting Wade at safety eliminates issues when he's only been playing safety for a month. There's a reason why the coaching staff has leaned towards putting the more experienced safety at Fuller's spot the last few years.

I also don't see how a player with less playing experience is expected to do much better. He's definitely better in man coverage, but I'm 100% sure he'd have the same issue with angles. It's a young player's problem. Malik Hooker had the same issue. Tyvis Powell had the same issue. Damon Webb had the same issue.

Experience helps.

Wade's best attribute is his coverage ability. I'd rate Pryor as competent at worst in that department.

I'm also not sure how well Wade will hold up against the run vs um let alone bama.

That is what is so sobering for me.

They had competition for that spot all spring, summer and fall.

During all that time Meyer kept saying safety was his #1 concern.

We see now what he was talking about and it clearly indicates no one else in that safety group is any better (or they would already be in there).

The LB's frustrate me.

The Safeties scare me.

It would allow Fuller to go back to the field safety spot. He would be the one taking the angels now and we can all agree he's good at it.

Wade would be in man coverage which he's good at and not back deep taking angels

It plays to our strengths all the way around. Fuller plays center field which eliminates our angel issue and Wade plays man which he excels at.

So its not Wade replacing Pryor... it would be Fuller replacing Pryor.
