2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

Rumor going around per Gerd that a C has been moved to S.

I'm speculating it's Wade.

Don't know how I feel about this. I'm bullish on Wade but hope this doesn't mean Fuller is more dinged then we think.
Tweet from Wade's father that was liked by Pantoni. Could be reading too much into this but maybe there's some legs to this theory....

Wade is incredibly talented, very near Okudah level. Will add speed immediately.

If our LB play doesn't improve, then Urban needs to make a change. Davis isn't exactly known for his recruiting prowess seeing how he never recruited in his life which some need reminded when they make the claim Urban hires on recruiting ability, NOT! Davis' group is not getting it done for two years in a row now. He has guys that were recruited by Alabama, Clemson, you name it. The talent is absolutely there. The guys are not being prepared properly.

Mr. Proctor, paging Mr, Proctor... black stripe off, he’ll get minutes this week, and who knows? Why not give an uber-talented freshman with no game experience a shot when you have guys who’ve been in the program and can’t separate.
I don't think its coincidence that he got it removed the week after a few Safetys struggled last week.

Sets him up to get some minutes I think

His recruiting videos and spring game performance show serious ball skills. Would be nice to have another safety like Malik Hooker roaming our secondary, and slot responsibilities should be no problem for Wade. I like this move.

Greg was asked about Wade playing well last week and I found the comments to cement what we've been hearing.

Greg said Wade is so talented he can play him at corner, nickel or safety. Went on to mention that him at safety would be no concerns due to his talent.

So he offered up his playing safety without being asked about a move to safety. I love it and I really love seeing another #24 at Safety.

If we can have a cover corner at safety thats huge. Not to mention he's more than likely not getting out ran

Ohio State Defense Working to Improve Screening Process

Greg-Schiano-3-1170x780.jpg

Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano said on Monday that 82% of Oregon State’s offensive production came on seven plays. The bulk of those yards came via an 80-yard run, a 78-yard run, and a 49-yard touchdown pass over the middle of the field.

Most of the rest of the bigger plays came via screen passes to receivers and running backs alike.

The screen pass is a popular way to neutralize a dynamic pass rush. It allows for the defensive line to take themselves out of the play by being sucked into a pass rush as the pass then either goes away from the rush or over top of it with offensive linemen and receivers waiting to block.

Defenses are often outnumbered in the second level as linebackers and defensive backs have to deal with offensive linemen and tackling in space.

Oregon State did a great job making Ohio State pay for their aggression, and Schiano knows that Rutgers is going to try to do similar things this weekend when the two teams meet in Ohio Stadium. He expects it to be a focal point until his defense shows that they can stop it.

“Without a doubt it will be,” he said. “Some of those screens we didn’t exactly do things the way we want them done, so we have to improve and get that done. The risk you have, you have to be careful because when you are evaluating your performance, did we do what we set out to do schematically and from a technique stand point. If we did and it didn’t work then we gotta find a new way to do it. If we didn’t, then let’s go do what we said we were going to do and then evaluate it. There is a little bit of that. We need to make sure we’re on point with our details.”

Schiano’s disappointment in his defense’s execution is in line with defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones’ answer when he was asked if there will be changes to how they approach the screen game this week.

“Nothing really different. We just have to be smarter,” he said. “We can’t just fly up the field. We’ve got to be attentive to the fact that people can screen on us because we’re so fast. We’re still working on it, but we’ll figure it out.”

Do you really think that Urban would replace Davis mid-season? I for one dont, if the LB play doesn't improve than I see him riding it out until the end of the season. The gift and curse to Urban F. Meyer is that hes fiercely loyal
