2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

If this is true, I'd assume it's more of a situational thing. Jordan ain't going nowhere. But Pryor was abused in coverage. In passing downs, if they take out the safety and put in a corner, that's an upgrade in pass defense.
Jordan almost played last week and was held out for precaution. If a corner moved then no doubt it was for the disastrous S play last week.

Shouldn't be too hard for transition either considering we play man and when we go with a deep safety its typically Fuller.

I would love the idea of Wade/Arnette/Riep back there next to fuller. Get another corner on the field since we have so much depth there.

All makes sense. And to be clear I’m a big fan of Greg. Just curious why nobody questions him much when defense is sub par.

And his first year, Fick was still here yes?

Regarding poor play by a certain position group, it’s easy to blame only the position coach but it’s all under Greg’s direction.

I expect Jordan coming back, a healthy Borland and all the young guys getting experience to make a major difference. So, by no means am I worried.

Just found it interesting that Greg has been pretty blameless during defensive slumps. I mean.......after Iowa just about EVERYONE should have to answer questions but I didn’t hear many people on here if any question him. Kinda weird to me.

Rumor going around per Gerd that a C has been moved to S.

I'm speculating it's Wade.

Don't know how I feel about this. I'm bullish on Wade but hope this doesn't mean Fuller is more dinged then we think.

Touched on it in the thread about weakest position but other than Fuller you have 6 guys, 4 sophs and 2 freshmen. Two of them can't separate from each other and you saw what they are all about at their current level of experience. The other four guys couldn't even supplant those two.

OSU is a balky hamstring away from having to use 2 of those 6 underclassmen against teams one hell of a lot better than Oregon State.

A CB moving over doesn't surprise me in the least.

Schiano sees these kids every day and knows what he's got and knows what needs work.
Trust the coaches!

Football: Ohio State defensive line learns from its mistakes

jones-1ls2fa1-530x353.jpg

Ohio State’s defensive line came into the first game of the 2018 season considered one of the best units in the nation.

Rotating in players like junior Nick Bosa, sophomore Chase Young, junior Jonathon Cooper and redshirt junior Dre’Mont Jones, the defensive line is known across the country for its aggressiveness and speed up front, getting to the opponent’s backfield before a play can even develop.

However, for a unit known to be aggressive, a relentlessness to get in the backfield at all costs, the Oregon State offense seemed to read that well at some points in the first game of the season.

When defensive ends like Young or Bosa crashed, seemingly trapping redshirt sophomore quarterback Conor Blount in the backfield, he would throw it softly outside with blockers preparing for a screen.

Even on plays when the defensive line had to defend the run, once junior running back Artavis Pierce broke free from the defensive line, he was off, recording two touchdowns of more than 75 yards.

The Beaver offense, despite being rushed by what many consider one of the best position groups in the country, might have found a weak spot.

“All you can really think is how crazy coach [Greg] Schiano is going to be this week of practice,” Bosa said after the game. “All the fundamental things, getting those issues fixed.”

For Cooper, he views the screen plays Oregon State ran as a compliment to Ohio State’s success up front, not giving the quarterback a proper amount of time to find a player deep or beat the defense as a whole vertically.

Regardless if he considers it a compliment, Jones looks at their success as something that needs to be fixed.

“We just have to be smarter,” Jones said Tuesday. “We can’t just slide the field. We have to be attentive to the fact that teams can screen on us because we are so fast.”

Obviously the big plays are concerning, but doesn't this happen just about every year at the beginning of the year? Feels like we always get off to a poor start, and then make our adjustments and start playing well. I don't have the time to look back on that stat at the moment, but it just feels that way from recollection.

Reminded me of UCF awhile back tbh.

The problem with high turnover I guess. I assume next year we'll be replacing 3 DBs again... by the time this is done half the DBs in NFL will be Buckeyes.

I see 2 solutions to the defense at LB and safety. At LB, I'd make browning the do it all 4th man. You basically rotate browning in for tuf and Werner (assuming the staff is higher on Malik as an everydown back). That way he's basically the 3rd down mlb and rotates in at olb with Werner.

At safety, I think Fuller coming back basically solves the issue for the most part. Pryor is the SS. While I'm sure he's practiced at FS, he's not ready for that. He was playing that on Saturday though. Put him at SS and his weaknesses are less noticeable.

While obviously those solutions are not jnjuriproof (as we saw saturSat), I think the team drastically improves with both.

For sure, takes awhile for the new guys to gel. I really just find it impossible to believe we have any talent issues on that side of the ball, really just think they need more time. Plus, as many have said, getting Borland and Fuller back will be huge.
