2018 QB Battle Discussion

Spot on. The main reason it is a debate is Burrow got injured last year and that allowed Haskins to back up JT and prove himself. I don't think Haskins would have been ahead of him if both were 100%. Burrow is the better QB and fit for the system. Based on what I have seen, I think it would be a mistake for Meyer to not name Burrow the starter, regardless of transfer risk. But yes, it seems the odds of having the backup stay are higher if Burrow is the starter, providing a possible additional benefit of picking JB.

Burrow and Haskins were both healthy during the Michigan game and Meyer chose Haskins. We don't have a big enough sample size of either to say that one is clearly the better option, hence is why we are still at a stalemate. Both are equally likely to transfer because whoever is named starter is likely starter for 2 years barring injury or blowing up as an NFL prospect. Even with Haskins trying to complete a crazy amount of deep balls in the last spring game he is still the more accurate QB between the two if you add all their meaningful throws together between last season and the last 2 spring games, although it's only a 1% difference. What we do know is both are good and both have different skill sets! So is the offense going to hum better under a vertical passing game that relies heavily on the RBs and keeps defenses from loading up the box (resembling more of an NFL run offense) or a more versitile playbook using more read option and balancing the carries more and a passing attack that works intermediate routes with a little less emphasis on vertically attacking (same offense that has put up good number for us in the past). Really the question you have to ask yourself is what QB will lead us to victory against Bama or Georgia!

Don't agree that they were on equal footing last year, even at the end of the year. The fact that Haskins had not broken his hand and missed practice time gave him a leg up last year. That advantage is no longer there, but the fact that Haskins has that experience might be important.

Haskins did a poor job of feeling the pressure and moving in the pocket in the spring game compared with Burrow, so I don't think it helps Haskins if they were going up against a strong DL.

Disagree... dudes hand was still huge by the time the scum game came around. As was pointed out Haskins had the benefit of getting scrub minutes while Burrow was out not to mention all of the practice reps as 2nd team.

Regardless of Haskin being back up all last year (again only because of injury) you have to think Burrow has out played him if it's really close.

I really think Burrow has given everyone something to think about and it seems to me he just may be pulling ahead.

Also to note in the spring game... on Haskins TD throw we were only down there because Burrow lead the offense down the field.

Obviously that spring game convinced me of Burrow and yeah I'm confident we can be successful with both. I just really liked the way we looked with Burrow.

Had this same feeling with Troy over Zwick (even before the opening game in 2004), and the same with JT over Cardale.

I bet if Burrow is named the ever so slight leader that both would stick around. I really do

That isn't fair to Haskin's his first drive they were moving great and then Burrows was inserted and it died. They both had deal with coming in mid drive numerous times or having a drive they started finished by the other. It was kinda weird that they didn't just alternate drives. It's almost like they were experimenting with how one would come in cold for a 2 qb system type situation.

I may go with Burrow if he gets a haircut; otherwise I'm on Team Haskins. With the long 'do, black jersey, and silver helmet, Burrow looks too much like Ken Stabler right now.

No offense, but as long as he can play like that, I don't care if he looks like Tiny Tim (the one that played the ukelele)! :slappy::urban1:

Saying he was only backup because of injury last year is not completely accurate. Joe led during spring ball, but it was completely even during fall camp. Neither had been given the #2 job and while they were still competing for the spot, Joe got injured.

I have been a Burrows fan since I saw him play in HS. He had something like 60+TDs and 1 INT his senior year. I saw him, with my own eyes, throw 40 yard passes on a rope on time - and that induced some "wows" because you don't see that in HS ball that often. I also saw him run and scramble very effectively. So, I have been, and am, a big Joe fan. He is the total package - and Ohio State can win whatever is out there to win with him.

Haskins is a player that I got familiar with last season. It's not theoretical with him, and I don't have to project him from HS to college. I have seen him play in college, and he has an elite arm and can run well enough. The difference between his and Joe's arm is probably negligible, and I suspect Joe is a little better runner than him, but Haskins has "it" - whatever that is or however you define it. "It" showed in the Michigan game. I would see it as the ability to perform in the clutch, do what needs to be down, inspire others to do what needs to be done, and just win. He has shown that he has "it" and Joe hasn't, so, big advantage to Haskins in my mind.

Martell is not a player that I was excited about. I felt he was too short and would never start at game at QB at OSU. I'm not ready to abandon that opinion, but he is elite in running the zone read. I think there is a role for him, and if he improves as a passer, maybe he will prove my opinion wrong. But he is so good in that ZRead that I think you have to put him on the field this year. But as a complete QB, he is a clear #3.

In my perfect world, I would want Haskins to start and play the bulk of snaps, Burrow to get some series, especially early in the year, and Martell to play in special situations. But knowing this isn't a perfect world, if it is a choice between Haskins and Burrow, I have to ask myself who would it kill me to see transfer, and by a hair, it's Haskins. So, if Joe moves on, I will still be a big fan of his.

Urban needs the wisdom of Solomon to know how to halve this baby.

The injury honestly wasn't that bad or he wouldn't have been out there throwing passes against Being out 3 weeks doesn't drop you behind a player if you are clearly the better player. The Michigan game was on the line you are going with your best Back up QB and both were healthy. And yes the spring game means everything just see Bam Childress, Taurian Washington, it splits our roster and the best players sit out and the outcome doesn't count on your record. Also Haskins probably isn't gonna throw a deep ball every other pass and wait for Jayln Harris to create seperation. So you think the fact that Haskins has unbelievable arm talent and has great accuracy on deep balls has no part in anything?

The coaches won't let you throw if you aren't able to throw or put you in a situation to be injured further if you aren't healthy enough. He threw game passes 2 months before the Michigan game so your hand comment is only speculation. The competition has always been close! So you don't think his arm has anything to do with him holding 2nd team reps. Spring game is still a glorified practice with split personnel Haskins wasn't exactly attempting high percentage passes. Haskins looked better than burrow in the spring game last year (you can go on YouTube and watch his throws) but no one talks about that and you don't even mention what he did against Michigan on the road coming off the bench with a deficit which holds 10x the weight the spring game does.

Disagree with the bolded. Burrow looked absolutely stellar in the Spring game last year. Haskins may have had 1 or 2 flashy throws on him, but I thought overall Burrow moved the chains more effectively and was overall the better QB (although it was close).

I forget which game it was but Burrow came into a game and threw a few passes and handoffs. Then was pulled when the team went into the victory formation. The only reason to pull him was because a direct snap into his hands could have aggravated the injury.

Burrow was 14 for 22 64% 262 yds and 3 TDs
Haskins was 26 for 37 70% 293 yds and 3 TDs
Not sure how you can say how Burrow was better when Haskins had a better completion percentage and had 3-4 (Dixon TD, McLaurin 2nd TD, 40 yd rope to glover Williams, late throw to TE up the sideline) flashy throws where burrow he had one (TD to uncovered MCCall). But again they are just a glorified practice burrow looked better this year and Haskins last year! Still not a great judge because the coverage isn't as tight, no QB pressure and the #1's aren't out there. But the 2017 game was a much more accurate display of Haskins throws because he wasn't throwing half of his balls as 50/50 deep balls and he actually threw intermediate routes.

Haskins may have had a fractionally higher completion percentage, but Burrow had an equal number of yards despite having only slightly more than half the attempts. Plus, from what I recall, Haskins stayed in most of the game and accumulated most of his yards against the 2nd/3rd string defense. Burrow came out on fire and stayed that way throughout.

Regardless, as you said, they're glorified practices. I'll leave the decision to Urban, but in my opinion both are very promising and I personally think Burrow is a superb passer.
