2018 QB Battle Discussion

I think this is the best overall resolution for everyone. I can't blame and, in fact, respect Burrow for the decision. He graduated and gave all he had as a Buckeye and I'm glad the graduate transfer rule exists to give him a solid shot at leading a team for two years. For tOSU, the pressure is off... and on and we move forward with that. The Haskins/Martell combo is a weapon and it will be interesting to see what happens before the 2019 season. I hope Martell progresses and Haskins has a stellar season in 2018 and makes the jump to the League leaving us with two years of Martell before the next wave of top tier QBs gets their shot. This a new problem for us (having to deal with a wealth of quality quarterbacks) and I hope it continues. Go Bucks and Burrow.

It's more likely that some fans are wishcasting and overestimating a player that hasn't taken a meaningful college snap.
I wouldn’t say it’s wishcasting or overestimating at all. Look at what JTB IV was able to accomplish with extremely limited throwing ability (beyond the 2014 season). If an unfortunate injury were to happen, I would think they would adjust the offense to a style Martell would be more comfortable with, and still easily thrive.

I don’t think he’s got deadly accurate deep threat ability, but the kid knows how to manage an offense and make plays happen.

Regardless of scheme, Martell is a largely unknown commodity. People can watch as much highschool film and psychoanalyze his tweets all they want, but everyone here has seen talented young "he's just a winner" QBs walk their baby nuts out onto college fields and get eviscerated. The only minor indicator of his possible success that we have right now is a spring game that he didn't look like a functional passer in. Hoping that the team would be alright with either QB is fine, expecting it is not wise.

This wouldn't be an issue if Ohio State had rebuilding years and I realize keeping both Burrow and Haskins wasn't going to happen, but either way, going into a season with only a starter with limited experience and a redshirt freshman with zero experience an injury away from taking over the offense during a probable NC run is absolutely cause for concern. Pessimistically this seems like one of those situations that could very easily end in a 2015-level missed opportunity.

All I can hope for at this point is no 'special plays' for Martell. We had a lot of special plays for Braxton in 2014. Probably 2-3 per game on average. In all those snaps he threw one pass for 3 yards. After his one xbox play against VaTech, almost every time Braxton lined up under center the defense played downhill and it was a loss or a couple yard gain. Basically throwing away a down. Every time he came in I cringed. Martell will play, I just hope they let him sling it.
