2018 QB Battle Discussion

We weren't using run-pass options with Braxton back then, though. I hope RPO will help Tate be productive.
They were using a playbook largely devoid of any means of getting Braxton the ball without alerting all 11 sets of defender eyes before the snap.
All I can hope for at this point is no 'special plays' for Martell. We had a lot of special plays for Braxton in 2014. Probably 2-3 per game on average. In all those snaps he threw one pass for 3 yards. After his one xbox play against VaTech, almost every time Braxton lined up under center the defense played downhill and it was a loss or a couple yard gain. Basically throwing away a down. Every time he came in I cringed. Martell will play, I just hope they let him sling it.
This the same offense that a year later struggled to get the ball to Curtis Samuel, and when they did, they decided, boy that was a gamebreaking run vs PSU. Let's never do that again, and stick with 751 passes to Mike Weber for less than a yard a pop.

Samuel had 171 touches that year and we ran that sweep towards the boundary countless times, including THE PLAY of that year vs tsun.

Also, the majority of Weber’s 23 catches that year were checkdowns, not plays designed to get him the ball.

He had two carries for 71 yds on the day. Tell me more about how effeciently they used their monster H backs in the Meyer/Beck/Ed mess.

Curtis was a monster. They struggled less to use him than Braxton but stunted schemes cost them big time in key losses both years.

That play was a staple of the 2014 NC run, particularly the counter off of it. That constraint, among countless others, was oddly forgotten most of the time.

Yes, that game was an abomination. Over the whole year the offense was largely focused around Samuel though, and we used countless schemes to get him the ball dispite defenses keying on him. His stats back this up.

Game tape also shows a number of games where Samuel was successful early, and then the staff wouldn’t give him the ball anymore. The way the offense used Samuel was criminally inconsistent. He was good enough to be in the conversation with McCaffrey , and his stats paled in comparison from what I remember. The same problem with how Samuel was used was the same problem that the staff had with using Zeke in 2015 in big games

He averaged 11.2 yds per carry vs Clemson. He carried the ball 6 times. Now that game's a little different overall (and he did have 9 catches), but they just struggled to get him the ball effectively at times.

The "Haskins Era" may only last one year and he and a whole bunch of veteran receivers could be gone leaving us with.....what? Tate Martell, Baldwin and a bunch of inexperience at WR. A major rebuild of the passing game. Ugh!
But that's a discussion for next year.

I take your point, but those veteran receivers have largely, to the blame of both system/coaching and themselves, under-achieved. I don't really think Haskins will be one and done, but if he is, we'll be fine. There's more talent on board waiting and coming in than is going out.

I'd take Tate throwing to guys like Babb, Gill, Smith, Harris, Wilson, Ruckert, and the RBs we're loading up on over most in the country. Urban, Day, Wilson and Smith have been and are bringing in thorobreds to run this offense.

While I appreciate your enthusiasm... You, Me, and everyone else on this board has been saying the same thing for years and had nothing to show. Our passing game has been sub par since our national championship run.

So because of that, our team is screwed from now On? Our passing game since the NC run was also led by a QB with a sub par arm, sub par OCs up until last year and WRs who didn't adapt to the passing game when the QB was more of a runnijng threat. I don't think that Martell will be similar to Barrett as far as playing style, but only time will tell
