2018-2019 College Basketball Discussion (Official Thread)

Jordan Caroline going full Latimer:

A Musselman coached team acting like bunch of out of control thugs because they got their asses handed to them on the court. Where have we seen that before?

what bennett has done at virginia is obviously impressive. it's still interesting to note that uva under bennett has consistently under-performed in the tournament compared to its seeding.

11-12: lost in first round as a 10-seed
13-14: lost in s16 as a 1-seed
14-15: lost in second round as a 2-seed
15-16: lost in e8 as a 1-seed
16-17: lost in second round as a 5-seed
17-18: lost in first round as a 1-seed

in 6 tries, uva under bennett has never out-performed its seed. perhaps that's not exactly fair, though, since they've been a 1-seed three times. but what makes bennett's teams look bad is that they've at least matched its seeding in only 2 tournaments (11-12 and 16-17). their record as 1- and 2-seeds is pretty darn bad -- even shameful.

perhaps this team will be more like the 15-16 team than the others because the offense is actually a real threat. they are ranked 4th in adjusted offensive efficiency (per kenpom). in every other season besides the 15-16 team (8th in aoe), uva was ranked lower than 20th in aoe.

to sum up, i'll have a hard time justifying this virginia team as anything better than an e8 pick. fool me once, shame on, shame on you...

UVA always seems to run into teams they dont match up well against in the tournament. Depending on who is in their bracket, I might just pick them to make the F4.
this is why their adjusted offensive efficiency sets them apart from all the other teams than the one that made the e8. it's generally a losing proposition to select deep runs for teams whose success depends on slow tempo and solid defense. rigid offenses are a bracket-killer. this uva offense is not rigid.

with texas and especially tcu losing by 10+, this was a good night for osu. while osu still controls its destiny and probably earns a bid with as little as a win on wednesday, even the seemingly insignificant things today might be very significant come selection sunday.
