2017 tOSU Offense Discussion

Was I watching a different game than everyone else? Haskins was still running the read option, and failing miserably. I clearly remember telling my buddy that everyone was keying on the running back because everyone knew Haskins wasn't going to keep it.
Truth. Same thing they've been doing to JT all year, trying to make him run. The difference is they need to run the same routes and have him put his athleticism on hold and let his receivers win it for him. What happens if Terry catches that ball even if it was underthrown? What about the Victor drop which would also would have been a first down? JT has always been a leader and the type that puts everything on himself. If his guys dont ball out for him, he's going to keep and try to do it himself. THAT is the player he is . Go back and look at the BiG Championship game with Cardale and tell me what you really see. I saw a guy throwing the ball up and letting his guys go win it, and they freaking did on almost every single play. Devin Smith was the best player in the country on that day. That does a hell of a lot for a QBs confidence. Yes Haskins has a sweet arm but he shouldnt needt it. If JT's guys go out and ball for him like they did vs Nebraska and second half vs PSU, he doesn't have to keep and put the team on his shoulders. More than any other game football is a team game. Guys got to completely step up to beat Wisconsin this time around and play the best team ball to win. Sorry so long but I love these guys and JT Barrett is the freaking man!

I didn't see much of it at all to be honest... You can tell we went away from the zone read due to the differences but it's one of those things you just can't not do totally.

The zone read is a good play for us but it's just a matter of how many times we run it.

I've been harping on this for awhile. I understand the match-up numbers the zone read gives and it should definitely be one of the tricks in the bag, but we're also tOSU and we ought to have lineman capable of run blocking the hell out of a defense, period, or we'll get someone in there who can. We ought to have a size and talent advantage over just about anyone and we have backs that should be good enough to make some ground even when we're evenly matched.

[EDITED]

Go back to the 3rd-and-1 from the scUM 25 with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the 4th quarter, the play before the missed FG. scUM had no one past three yards from the LOS--no one--and ten defenders within two yards. They had eight in the box, with DBs on our three wideouts on either side. We ran the read option with Haskins handing it directly to Weber, who lost two yards because Gary crashed down from the right and the other DE crashed down from the left, virtually unblocked from the outside...they were totally selling out on stopping Weber. Had Haskins kept it, he very likely gets outside of Gary and walks 25 yards for a TD...even if Gary didn't crash down and ended up tackling Haskins, it would've been little, if any, different than how the play ended up originally.

Surprised we didn't audible on that to a quick throw to the slot WR at the bottom of the screen

I wonder if the Illinois game was in his head there. He did that exact thing when he fumbled in that game. Difference is there was likely no one waiting for him this time.

I thought RPO's would mostly replace the read option. They fit Barretts skill set so well and de-emphasize his weaknesses.

The problem is defense can still dictate a JT run, and we saw it again at TTUN. Once JT left, we saw some straight runs to Dobbins and Weber and got good yardage.

I'm hoping we see more of those plays, even with JT, tomorrow. It shouldn't take him leaving the game to emphasize our running backs.

Because our coaching staff make better use of our weapons when JT's not in the game? That's not on JT. It's on them.

I'm hoping they learned something last week. We'll see.
Exactly what I said in another thread. I personally feel if they called the game like Haskins was the QB that JT could execute it just as well.

QB is the product of those around him... so prove it staff! We have the best 1-2 punch at RB and 3 first team Americans on the OL.

If they run JT into the ground tonight they should be ashamed of themselves considering what kind of shape he's in

I think it’s time for the offense to evolve. The read option should always be a complimentary option, as should the QB run. It shouldn’t be what the offense is centered on. With the RBs that Ohio State has been able to recruit, as well as the talent at WR, there shouldn’t be a need to go into conservative, QB run/read mode moving forward.

If you really want to keep running it, design a play package for Martell to run next season where he can make plays with his feet, as well as keeping a defense honest by taking a shot. But when/if Haskins is out there (assuming he is the next starter), I would like to see more of a pro style, shotgun base.

Yeah, especially with the QBs returning there has to be a change. If Haskins is running the ball even half as much as Barrett, 2018 will be a repeat of the 2015 offense. Also, I'm pretty sure Columbus will riot if Dobbins only gets 4 carries in a game next year.
