2017 tOSU Offense Discussion

I think it’s time for the offense to evolve. The read option should always be a complimentary option, as should the QB run. It shouldn’t be what the offense is centered on. With the RBs that Ohio State has been able to recruit, as well as the talent at WR, there shouldn’t be a need to go into conservative, QB run/read mode moving forward.

If you really want to keep running it, design a play package for Martell to run next season where he can make plays with his feet, as well as keeping a defense honest by taking a shot. But when/if Haskins is out there (assuming he is the next starter), I would like to see more of a pro style, shotgun base.

I'm against two-QB packages on principle. You ultimately wind up with Braxton in the wildcat losing three yards every snap.

To hell with "the Ohio State offense." It's Urban Meyer's offense and every d-coordinator knows it, and it gets stale against defenses that aren't chopped liver. You didn't hire Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day to run "the Utah offense." Cut 'em loose and let them figure out how to play to Haskins' strengths while minimizing his weaknesses. If that means ripping the entire chapter of zone-read/pistol offense from the playbook, so be it.

I love Urban but he needs to stay his ass out of the way and let Wilson/Day do their thing. Indiana was able to make B1G defenses look silly without a running QB and 1/20th of the overall talent on the OSU roster. Let Haskins sling it all over the field. Let Dobbins (and hopefully Weber) run all over opposing B1G defenses. If Haskins runs the read option or is forced to run more than a handful of times Wilson should resign on the spot.

To be fair, this isn't the Utah, or even Florida, offense in important games. It's a watered down version the power spread. It's hard to explain at this point; it's like being part of the movie Groundhog Day. At one point, Baugh motioned into the fullback for what everyone knew was going to be a JT keeper, a timeout was called, and then Baugh motioned into the fullback for what everyone knew was going to be a JT keeper.

In Wilson/Days defense, they are trying to work with what they have. JT is not going to throw it all over the field, they have to rely on the RO. JTs arm made it only possible to do so much. I will be stunned if next year is not quite a bit different, unless Burrow wins the job.

I know he's had fumbles this year but my god Parris Campbell needs to be more involved in the offense. If not this year then certainly next. Give him reverses, screens, whatever.

I hate to compare anyone to Ted Ginn but this kid has speed I haven't seen since Ted Ginn. Assuming he won't go to the NFL but who knows, he's got to be one of the fastest players in college football

Everyone is automatically pencilling in Haskins. I wouldn't just totally discount Burrow. After seeing his hand, I understand why he hasnt played this year. The Spring is going to be very interesting in Buckeye country.
I think there's a better chance Burrow transfers than him winning the starting job.

It's Haskins' job. It always was, for me at least. The moment he decommitted from Maryland and committed here I thought he would be JT's successor. I've seen nothing to feel any differently. And he is going to be great.

Yep. I would love to see him get more screens and hand offs in a game. I'm pretty surprised he hasn't gotten more handoffs or any pop passes. Two of his handoffs went for a TD and 44 yards. Another went for a 74 yard TD before being called back.

As for the NFL, he's one of the best athletes in CFB, but his hands and perhaps his limited routes are holding him back from being taken in the first couple rounds. He could still make a team as a KR and threat on screens, but you'd have to think another year would improve his initial draft spot. I think with McCall getting healthy this year, he could move to H and Campbell could see more time on the outside as a true WR. That's gotta help. If he can get rid of the bad drops and be more consistent, he could blow up like Glenn did in '95.

Campbell isn't a true WR though. If were having such reservations about his hands, that speaks loudly! He can't catch consistently in routes. His strength is getting the ball in space, making people miss and gaining yards. he reminds me of the WR from the movie Necessary Roughness, he can blow by people and the ball hits him in the hands and drops

I think the problem is trust and loyalty. Meyer trusts Barrett and is incredibly loyal to him.

Barrett has taken much abuse scrambling to win games, overshadowing his inability to win them with his arm since returning from injury in the 2014 NC run and being "Becked". There was Penn State, of course, but he blew the season up in Iowa trying to recapture that performance. Barrett has put his body on the line to run Meyer's offense and distinguished himself. He trusted him to win games, and he is loyal to him to a fault.

What is wrong with this picture, in my opinion, is that Meyer's inflexible rigidity makes his team vulnerable, just like Woody's rigidity did. He won a NC precisely because Barrett went down and he was forced to adapt to Jones. He might be playing for one this year if he had given Haskins a chance in the second half against Wisky.

I have such respect for Barrett, but this offense would have achieved more if he had recaptured his 2014 arm.

WARTS AND ALL, OHIO STATE'S 2017 AERIAL ATTACK CURRENTLY STANDS AS THE MOST PROLIFIC OF THE URBAN MEYER ERA

89450_h.jpg

With one game left in its 2017 football season, the oft-maligned Buckeye passing attack is on pace to easily finish as the most prolific of the Urban Meyer era.

It's understandable if that's a bit of a surprise considering the passing game struggles-to-failures in more than a few big games this year including losses to Oklahoma and Iowa, and even in wins against Michigan and Wisconsin, in particular.

Sprinkled around those duds however were huge outings against lesser-caliber teams along with a truly spectacular performance as Ohio State's aerial attack triggered a miraculous comeback win over an excellent Penn State squad.

Typically at the center of the success, failures and angst when it comes to the passing game are J.T. Barrett, Zone Six and wide receivers coach Zach Smith.

Buckeye Breakdown: The Unicorn Formation

Parris-Campbell-USC-1170x780.jpg

After the Indiana game when J.K. Dobbins burst onto the national scene, the consensus among Ohio State fans was that they wanted to see a heavy dose of Mike Weber and Dobbins in the same backfield. We saw a small glimpse of what could be against Nebraska when K.J. Hill aligned with Dobbins, but never did we see the formation known only as “Unicorn” …until the Cotton Bowl.

Early in the third quarter, Mike Weber motioned from the slot into the backfield. If you were getting a refill or returning from the bathroom you likely missed it. It was glorious.

But after a season of begging for creativity, Buckeye fans were left with a play they had seen numerous times before — an end around to Parris Campbell. Don’t get me wrong, it was a welcomed change from J.T. Barrett on a quarterback draw, but it left me wanting more.

I take a closer look at the ONE play that could spur a change in identity next season, as well as offer up variations off the same look with added audio in another edition of Buckeye Breakdown

Thanks for the play breakdown. We, as fans, have been clamoring to see that formation more throughout the season. As Weber got healthier in the latter half of the season, I thought we would see more of it on a regular basis and it just didn't happen. If Weber comes back, maybe that is the wrinkle they put in to keep defenses off balance, get the ball into the RB's hands, and decrease the amount of QB runs. Hopeful but not optimistic.
