2017 tOSU Offense Discussion

Good stuff. I've also wanted to see us move further away from the read-option if for no other reason that it tends to get your QB killed eventually. Meyer hasn't had a QB yet finish out an entire season without getting injured. I don't want him to scrap it entirely but no way should your QB ever have more carries than your RB unless he's scrambling all day.

Part of me thinks that JT still isn't completely right after his ankle injury and now it appears that he's been dealing with that weird knee issue all season.
IMO the QB should be ran at tops 5-8 times, and right now we are typically doubling that number (particularly when the game is close). We try far too hard to have a "numbers advantage" and it really hinders the flow of the game.

For example, when teams have the ball at the 1 yard line they typically run straight ahead regardless that 11 players are in the box. Regardless of that fact the success of a simple dive for 1 yard with 11 in the box is probably somewhere north of 70% I'd imagine. So if you can get 1-2 yards a clip with 11 players in the box then you can get 4-5 when there's 7 in the box with a typical running back hand off.

Not every play has to be a home run, not every play needs to have a numbers advantage, and sometimes just trusting your running backs to make 1-2 guys miss is better. All I know is that a typical off tackle play right now is more effective then QB right or QB left.

One other thing is you can rotate running backs to keep wear and tear down, but you cannot do that with your QB.
It is especially frustrating after embarrassing losses (MSU ‘15, Oklahoma ‘17, Iowa ‘17, probably others) where the offense struggled and the RBs only had a handful of carries while the QB has 20+, and Meyer says we need to work on getting the RB the ball more.

The reason the RBs aren’t getting the ball is because teams are keying on them in the read option game and the QB is keeping based on his read. It’s the basic design of the read option ground game that defenses are scheming against to keep the ball in the QBs hand.

If we want to get the ball to the RB then hand the ball to the RB and stop running read option.

been saying this for 3 years. We could line up in an "I" formation and have better success, eliminating a lot of the lateral negative plays that put us way behind the chains on 2nd and 3rd downs. With the lines and talented backs we have had... frustrating!

If you are going to run with JT, put the package back in they used mid-season where Rashod Berry is in the backfield with him, still have some motion/misdirection to get the defense moving pre snap and give them someone else they have to account for and then give JT a lead blocker on the QB draw. BOOM!

A lethal passing attack would do wonders for the run game.
Just like a lethal running attack would do wonders for the passing game... I feel more comfortable having Dobbins/Weber be the primary attack and then go after a defense with the passing game to throw them off. JT is not a QB that will win games purely with his arm

Maybe when there are a bunch of great football minds in the room it becomes difficult to really simplify things? ...certainly wasn’t the case with the defense last year.

For all the love of Beck, in 2014 he didn’t realize the weapon he had in Elliot until he was forced into it by injury.

With the obvious talent advantage we have over virtually everyone, it’s no surprise that simplifying our offense and allowing our talent to shine proves effective.

We might need the minds to knife their collective intellect schematically through the elite, but, for the most part, this roster produces the most when running simple offense confidently.

That's the whole problem though for me. Defenses load up to stop the run because JT isnt going to beat them with his arm, even when the running game is on point. Give me Haskins that will make the D pay dearly for loading the box.

... I didnt want to be the one to say the same. Though I'm still in JT's corner, I just disagree with the way the staff calls plays for him when compared to Haskins...
Yes I agree. It's just so focused on JT and it's just not fair at all to have everything run through one person when you have so many good players.

I loved that we just turned around and handed the ball off to the RB's last week once Haskins was forced into action.

"Simplify". I do think it's as easy as that, regardless of who is at QB. Line up, hand the ball off to the RB's. Once that's established and working, opens up everything else in the playbook and the passing game. Defenses just keying too much on JT. Haskins was able to scramble due to the element of surprise.

Was I watching a different game than everyone else? Haskins was still running the read option, and failing miserably. I clearly remember telling my buddy that everyone was keying on the running back because everyone knew Haskins wasn't going to keep it.
