2017 tOSU Defense Discussion

I get what you are saying, believe me. But players like Chase still find a way to get on the field no matter who is in front of them. I really think he is that good.
It helps that Lewis has been a force for many years and could relinquish some snaps. I'm wondering if Young simply gets a disproportionate number of the 2nd/3rd string snaps.
Yeah. I was just watching this clip yesterday and all I could say was something along the lines of...............holy [Mark May] this dude is a monster. I realize he has done nothing yet but it's hard not to be excited at this dude's potential. I personally think he has the highest first round draft potential someday of anyone currently on the roster.

If you have been living under a rock and never watched this clip do yourself a favor and watch these glorious 3+ minutes. It's all jaw dropping but :57........damn.

Having just seen him in person at FNL, I can't help but notice how tiny he looks at the Army game compared to now. He's packed on a minimum of 20 lbs since then and looks like a SSDE.

You mean the Army game when he was the best player on the field and didn't really have any coaching yet from the best D Line coach in America? Or worked with Coach Mick yet (see Tate's recent pic)

Man I love hearing this. Thanks for the update.

I'm confident in my prediction.

Yup. He looked like a monster who was surprisingly sleek at 240-250 lbs. Now he looks like a 265-270 lb tank. Now it's possible his weight was generous last winter, but whatever the case, he looks a lot more mature physically.

Gracious. Dude is gonna dominate.

Wiltfong has been saying it for a while now. I pay attention to how 247 ranks their players - based on where they project they could eventually go in the draft. And Wiltfong has said repeatedly that Young has as much upside as anyone in the '17 class and I see why.

Just PT was found for Bosa last year as a true frosh, if Young is as good as advertised than I see no reason why he couldn't find PT as well. There will be a solid rotation, and by the end of the year with getting nicked and banged up, "backups" like Young should see time while keeping the starters fresh and ready for The Game and CFP.

The Dline gave us the pleasure of dropping 7 most of the time. We didn't need to send 5 because they were so good. Go find some articles where Schiano praises the Dline and how that afforded him so many other opportunities to use the rest of the defense differently. Anyone that thinks the Dline is/was over rated just is clueless about how the game of football is played. Total sacks is not the measuring stick for a Dline. We could send two LBs every third down and increase our sack total for sure, and our scoring defense number would increase.

My impression is that LJsr gets everyone to stay in their lanes. Fewer sacks, but fewer scrambles.

Really hope we get to see some of the young secondary on the field this year.

Random question: what group of corners would you take: Apple, Conley & Lattimore or Winfield, Clements & Plummer?[/QUOTE]
Two different eras of football being played. W,C and P played in a more Pro-style run centric era. While the former played in the era of the spread and open space offenses. Though the latter had better tacklers, would they be able to cover as well and for as long as the former had to? Football nowadays gives more advantages to the offense, especially in the college game

FIVE FRESHMEN MOST LIKELY TO PLAY FOR THE BUCKEYES IN 2017

2. BARON BROWNING — ILB

If there's one position where the Buckeyes lack depth, it's the interior defensive line. Behind Chris Worley, who played outside linebacker his first three seasons at Ohio State and is starting at the MIKE for the first time this season, there isn't a player with really any game experience — meaningful or not.

Justin Hilliard and Nick Conner are two former top-10 linebackers coming out of high school, but both have been hampered by injuries throughout their Ohio State careers and even if they are healthy, they have little-to-no experience at the position.

3. CHASE YOUNG — DE

The fact that Chase Young is so low on this list speaks volumes to how talented and deep Ohio State's defensive line will be in 2017, because Young is arguably the most talented player in the Buckeyes' entire class and would likely push for a starting spot at many schools around the nation.

At Ohio State though, it will be hard for him to even crack the rotation. Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard, Jalyn Holmes, Nick Bosa and likely Jonathan Cooper will all be ahead of him on the depth chart in 2017, making the No. 2 defensive end in the 2017 class the sixth best option for the Buckeye defensive line.

4. SHAUN WADE/JEFFREY OKUDAH — CB
When you sign the nation's top-two cornerbacks, you play them right away.

I don't think there's any question that both Shaun Wade and Jeffrey Okudah will see the field in 2017. The five-stars cornerbacks are game-ready and look to be Ohio State's next generation of elite cornerbacks.

That's an important note: the next generation of elite cornerbacks.

Okudah and Wade will both play in 2017, but barring an injury to another cornerback, it likely won't be in a terribly meaningful capacity. The Buckeyes return Denzel Ward, who was essentially a starter last season, playing the same number of snaps as first-round picks Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley, as well as Damon Arnette who played the nickel last season. They also add Kendall Sheffield, the nation's top junior college cornerback and a former five-star recruit, who has two years of college experience under his belt.
