2017 tOSU Defense Discussion

All the talk about how great this defensive line will be but where were they last year? I know it sounds "picky".
Where were the sacks? Where was the pressure up the middle?
The defense was mid pack at end of season.
scUM was better. Ped State was better. Even lowly Illinois was better. I want to see sack totals in the 40s.
I think the secondary bailed us out a lot last year. .Those guys are gone. What happens this year when we're not getting to the QB ? We may be in for a step back because the guys in the secondary aren't as good. And the defensive line is "over-rated". I hope the defensive line IS great THIS year. We may need it to be!

Yeah @Taosman, Dre'Mont Jones, Joey Bosa, Robert Landers were just awful at creating pressure up the middle. Great take.

Also, opposing qbs just decided to give away all of those pick sixes because they were stupid. It definitely wasn't the pass rush.

The ending might be my favorite part. They're overrated but you really hope they're awesome.

Could they get home more? Sure. Were they still quite good and impactful? Yes.

The Dline gave us the pleasure of dropping 7 most of the time. We didn't need to send 5 because they were so good. Go find some articles where Schiano praises the Dline and how that afforded him so many other opportunities to use the rest of the defense differently. Anyone that thinks the Dline is/was over rated just is clueless about how the game of football is played. Total sacks is not the measuring stick for a Dline. We could send two LBs every third down and increase our sack total for sure, and our scoring defense number would increase.

Pre-camp buzz is strong on Chase Young. Got to get him some reps somewhere.
Well they have three all B1G caliber DEs plus another one that would start at almost all other schools. Then you have to find ways to get Cooper reps.

I think the answer is to hope Wilson puts up some big numbers and leads to let the backups get in early and often. It's a necessity too, because three of those ends are gone this off-season and Bosa is gone the year after that.

I'm hoping that Sprinkle gets the chance to shine this year. Hard luck kid. For those of us of a certain age, his name conjures up memories of the Bears' Ed Sprinkle - the man who probably is responsible for outlawing the clothesline tackle - uh, for those of us old enough to remember what a clothesline is.

https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/01/...ve-end-known-for-violent-play-dies-at-90.html

"He weighed only 200 pounds or so, but in his 12 seasons with the Bears, he flattened quarterbacks with a powerful forearm delivered to the nose, jaw or throat, a legal tactic at the time that earned him the nickname the Claw.

“I never really played dirty football in my life, but I’d knock the hell out of a guy if I got the chance,” Sprinkle told Stuart Leuthner in the oral history “Iron Men” (1988)."

I was at a 1951 Bears - Browns game - later to be dubbed "The most penalized game in NFL history" an honor since surpassed by several other notorious games including the Bengals - Steelers- when Sprinkle took out Otto Graham with a clothesline tackle that lifted the QB off his feet and leveled him. Later in the game he ripped Graham's helmet off which led to a fumble which Sprinkle recovered and took off on a 50 yard TD run. Browns still won the game.

Yeah. I was just watching this clip yesterday and all I could say was something along the lines of...............holy shit this dude is a monster. I realize he has done nothing yet but it's hard not to be excited at this dude's potential. I personally think he has the highest first round draft potential someday of anyone currently on the roster.

If you have been living under a rock and never watched this clip do yourself a favor and watch these glorious 3+ minutes. It's all jaw dropping but :57........damn.

I get what you are saying, believe me. But players like Chase still find a way to get on the field no matter who is in front of them. I really think he is that good.
