2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

among the lesser known coaches, i think joe dooley is the most attractive option.

as i've noted before, dooley has a very good résumé. his fgcu teams have been good, winning the conference 2 of 4 seasons, finishing 2nd the other times, and making it to the tournament 3 times. two seasons ago, his 16-seed played unc nip-and-tuck during the first half before finally losing by a respectable 16 to the team that lost by 3 in the title game. in the last tournament, his 14-seed nearly beat fsu. also, kansas fans have a high opinion of dooley. he was an outstanding recruiter at kansas for a decade, pulling in many 5-stars and high 4s. dooley may not have direct ties to ohio, but his years at ku and fgcu will open doors in the midwest, east coast, and southeast.

We've already heard a bunch of names, supposedly considered and such...I dunno, could be a smoke-screen. Does Gene already have his guy? Holtmann has not come up yet....He was an assistant for Groce at Ohio, he's absolutely proven, he's 45, with extensive basketball work done in the states of Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. He'd be a very solid pick, and possibly even the best guy for the job. Shrug...

But would Holtmann really have any interest?

IMO he'd be taking a big risk by jumping to Ohio State right now this late in the game, considering the depleted roster and damaged recruiting.

At this point only a guy at a smaller school is probably going to be willing to take that chance. (or an NBA guy who wants to come back to college of course)

GREG MCDERMOTT SAYS HE WILL REMAIN HEAD COACH AT CREIGHTON

Not a fan of McDermott unless he has 5 or 6 more kids like Doug (who averaged 21.7 ppg); he had a losing record at his only major conference school (i.e Iowa State 56-68). I'm thinking that we "dodged a bullet" there.

Smith has already publicly stated that 2017-18 will be a lost year. So, why not go with an interim coach (i.e. Jent) and after the 2017-2018 season go after someone that has promise, a good resume etc.

At this point, Jent as interim may be the best option if you can't find somebody that you feel can legitimately inject some life into and turn around a slowly dying program. But if they hire him on fulltime, they're essentially signaling they don't give a frog's fat ass about having a good basketball program. Jent will have teams playing in front of an army of empty seats.

17-18 might be a "lost year" on the court. But on the recruiting trail it's not. Having a interim coach only puts them another year behind on recruiting pretty much.

I want to feel that way. But to me, Donovan is a guy that you have already brokered a handshake agreement with prior to forcing Matta out. If that's the case, why does Smith fly to Omaha to meet with a guy like McDermott?
