2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

Why are Ohio ties important?
maybe "ties" is not the appropriate word but I think it is important that a new coach coming in is familiar with Ohio high school basketball and the high school coaches. One of the "reasons" GS gave for firing Matta was because of his lack of recruiting and probably, more specifically, recruiting the best high school basketball players in Ohio. I personally do not think that Ohio State can recruit nationally for the big time recruits but if they can close the door on Ohio they can field a pretty good team every year.

I guess I have more confidence in Jent then you or @NFBuck because I would hire him permanently. Not on a interim basis. He has the Ohio ties that not many coaches do and he is a pretty knowledgeable basketball guy.

I have "Ohio ties" and am "a pretty knowledgeable basketball guy" (not exactly a high standard). I also have as many head coaching victories as Jent, and I'm an Ohio State alumnus. Do you wanna hire me permanently? :biggrin2:

Jent is an interim stop-gap, at best, until proven otherwise. In a perfect world, he impresses the hell out of everyone and the "interim" tag is removed in 2018. But at this time you're taking a leap of faith (while wearing a blindfold) if you commit to him, indefinitely.

but you have never coached in the NBA and I do not think that you ever helped Lebron James with his shooting.. I just think that Chris looks a lot better to me than some of the guys that are left. Maybe it would be different if the list of available coaches was different. You are not on that list

All I know is that Jent was on the staff that oversaw the total implosion of the program.

Look at it this way...if Urban Meyer's tenure came unglued and the football program, recruiting, and general atmosphere was in the [Mark May]ter, would you want to hire one of his assistants to take over the program?
To be fair, Jent was absent when the actual implosion happened. Jent was brought back onto the staff last year to "stop the bleeding" as it were and to help Matta get the program back to how it was the last time Jent was on staff.

Fair enough. But he was on the staff this year when things went tits up.

My point being that the program needs a total overhaul, and hiring a guy with deep ties to the previous regime is not the way to do that.
