2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

I would say it's a pretty average hire. It's not a home run and it's not a total dud. I don't necessarily have confidence that Holtmann will bring us to Thad Matta's level of success. I would have preferred Buzz or Frank Martin over Holtmann but he could very well prove me wrong.

Average? Coach of the year of a P5 conference that sent 7 teams to the tournament. He might not be Sean Miller or Billy Donovan, but I don't think he's average, and has a ton of potential at 45 years old.

Yes he had one year coaching where he got a slightly above average result. Butler's been a pretty consistent tournament team but he lived up to that potential but not more

For comparison Buzz turned around a bottom feeder ACC team into a tourney team in 3 years and took Marquette to two Sweet Sixteens and an Elite Eight and he's 44.

Then Buzz isn't average either :) With all things considered with timing and State of the program, this would be close to a home run. Just my opinion, but I'd certainly be happier with him than with McDermott, Jent, Kelsey or Crean... who I'd deem average or below.

Holtmann is a very highly regarded coach for a reason. Just about everybody that's spoke of him agrees it would be about as good a hire as they could make this side of pipe dreams like Donovan. His record at Butler isn't as shiny as Stevens, but I'd say that Stevens is one of the top college coaches of the last 25 years.

Give me Holtmann any day. If we can't land him, Buzz Williams would be my next realistic choice.
