2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

Holtmann in a quick glance
  • Big South Coach of the Year (2013)
  • Big East Coach of the Year (2017)
  • John McLendon National Coach of the Year (2017)
Won at least 20 games in all 3 years at Butler, as well at least one game in the NCAA tournament each year. This past year was a #4 seed, after finishing second in the Big East at 25-9.

"Jeff Goodman of ESPN has described Holtmann as "a guy who just flat-out gets it. He has a tremendous work ethic, connects with his players, can recruit and also knows the game."Recruiting expert Dave Telep said Holtmann "has always done a good job with his [player] evaluations" and said few coaches work harder than him.During his career, Holtmann has recruited seven all-conference players. Thirteen players he coached or recruited have gone on to play professionally"

I'd say this is home run hire if it happens. I was a little blinded with some of the other names thrown out, but this Holtmann is a star, and GS's savior if he lands him.

So, if it is Holtmann, will this thread finish up with a long series of apologies from all the folks who were ready to kick the chair out from under GS?

That would be one pretty slick hire given the circumstances.

That said, I am as confident in this as I was in McDermott until I hear something official.

unless holtmann or another top hire was actually in gene's pocket when he fired matta, then, no, i will not offer up an apology to gene for firing the coach in june without a scandal being the cause. once summer came around, i think by far the wisest choice would have been to start laying the groundwork for a hire next spring.

Well it depends on if he actually officially offered McDermott the job first and got turned down or if it was hearsay I guess.

by the way, i wouldn't be surprised if gene gave matta two options: either you announce on tuesday your resignation after next season or i announce on tuesday your immediate firing. the former is a more graceful departure, but it foregoes the remaining two years on contract. the latter is not at all graceful, but the payout is substantial.

Gene said they are "honoring the contract", and I read somewhere (Cleveland.com? don't have the link now) that contract language may still entitle Thad to most of the remaining $$.

matta coached ohio state long enough and achieved enough without any off-the-field issues whatsoever that i'd be surprised if he won't receive the whole remainder or darn near it. in my opinion, he deserves every last penny.

Hell no. This has been a shit show and tbh should have happened a year ago like a lot of us asked for.

Pretty sure I read that his contract will be honored (3 years) as it should be imo.

I will offer up an apology to GS if and when it's warranted.

Let's pray that it's warranted

If he lands Holtmann, I'll offer him a tip of the hat for getting a very good coach and eat some crow.

I'm not anywhere near convinced it's even in the neighborhood of done. No solid info and we've already had two false starts in the last 24 hours.

I would say it's a pretty average hire. It's not a home run and it's not a total dud. I don't necessarily have confidence that Holtmann will bring us to Thad Matta's level of success. I would have preferred Buzz or Frank Martin over Holtmann but he could very well prove me wrong.
