Ohio State will hold a press conference today at the Fawcett Center to announce Chris Holtmann as its new men’s basketball coach, multiple sources close to the situation have confirmed to The Dispatch

When I was originally envisioning a coaching search following the 2017-18 season, prior to IU snatching up Miller, my list was:

1. Archie Miller
2. Chris Holtmann
3. Chris Mack

There wasn't much space between Miller and Holtmann. If this, in fact, is the way we're going, we made out pretty well.

So, if it is Holtmann, will this thread finish up with a long series of apologies from all the folks who were ready to kick the chair out from under GS?

That would be one pretty slick hire given the circumstances.

That said, I am as confident in this as I was in McDermott until I hear something official.

I haven't said anything in the thread, but I have been critical of the process and GS thus far. If it's true, I think it's a great hire but my thoughts on the process would probably still be this:

Because Butler had a longer trip in the tournament than Dayton. Miller was announced the day after Butler lost to UNC. He never even interviewed.

Also, Indiana doesn't have the best track record of hiring coaches so I wouldn't put any weight on their decisions.

Their last 3 coaches before Miller were Kelvin Sampson, Dan Dakich, and Tom Crean. Sure, a number of us liked Miller but IU's recent track record of coach selection suggests it may not turn out as we think.

It's a comparable hire to Miller, which is about as much as we could've realistically hoped for given the ill-conceived timing of our search.

I don't really have a problem with the timing. I wasn't ready to fire Thad after the season. Felt like he'd earned the right to coach one more year. But then we've had a terrible offseason and it became apparent this program could no longer progress under Matta (which was hard to admit for anybody who knows what he's done for this program).

And then you get a 45-year-old coach who brings everything to the table but star power. Sounds like Thad Matta 2.0. I'm pretty excited.

Archie has a much better resume but Holtmann could end up being better.

Never heard of an 8 year deal out of the gate. Sounds like a bit of a risk
