I don't really have a problem with the timing. I wasn't ready to fire Thad after the season. Felt like he'd earned the right to coach one more year. But then we've had a terrible offseason and it became apparent this program could no longer progress under Matta (which was hard to admit for anybody who knows what he's done for this program).

And then you get a 45-year-old coach who brings everything to the table but star power. Sounds like Thad Matta 2.0. I'm pretty excited.

The timing looks a lot better when you manage to land a guy like Holtmann, but it's still not the best way to go about it. Limiting your own options is never a good idea, and more often than not it bites you on your ass.

None of the reasons cited for replacing Thad suddenly popped up the last two months. I attribute the delay to a misplaced sense of loyalty, wanting to reward a guy for past successes despite steady decline, falling attendance, and mediocre recruiting. Amazingly, after all he did in between, whether or not Thad left the program better than he found it isn't entirely clear. I thank him for some fun seasons, but it's sad the way it went downhill.

Because Butler had a longer trip in the tournament than Dayton. Miller was announced the day after Butler lost to UNC. He never even interviewed.

Also, Indiana doesn't have the best track record of hiring coaches so I wouldn't put any weight on their decisions.
You don't think IU would've waited if they wanted Holtmann over Miller? Interviews are sometimes mere formalities after discussions have taken place behind the scenes with agents.

We'll just have to wait and see how it plays out. I thought the writing on the wall was clear enough before the end of the season and advocated making a change and offering Archie Miller. Don't try to suggest that IU hiring him makes him a bad pick. If Miller wins B1G titles and Holtmann doesn't then Gene Smith fucked up (again). There are no sure things so hopefully we wound up with the better coach. Only time will tell.

that's not entirely fair. I wouldn't put Ohio State and Indiana basketball on even ground to start.

Donovan/Hoiberg/Millers/Buzz/Frank Martin/Holtmann, in that order pretty much
For starters, Donovan and either of the Millers were pipe dreams. Yes, Archie may have been in play if we acted sooner, but there's no guarantee he choses OSU over IU. And that's the past anyway. Also, while I think Buzz and Hoiberg are fine coaches, Holtmann's resume isn't much different. Hoiberg had some questions as well, wrt recruiting. Frank Martin has a past of some shady dealings, so that was probably never happening.

Holtmann is a highly regarded coach nationally, and reactions to the hire are pretty much positive across the board. I guess I just don't see how it can be viewed as disappointing in any way given the timing, and current state/profile of the tOSU basketball program. Then again, I remember a segment of the fanbase that felt "meh" about Matta when he was hired, so I guess you're never gonna please everybody.

Ok, so now that the deal is done (apparently)I'll offer an apology on par with this process;

Sorry, sort of, I doubted you Gene as you somehow kind of quasi-cluster fucked this thing in such a way that the result seems better than it probably is but who the fuck knows.

I do not believe for one second that this guy was his first choice and that it was all lined up and well thought out. The ultimate yardstick is going to be Holtman vs Archie Miller over time because if this was done right in the first place, I believe we have Miller.

We'll never get the inner workings, but facts are that he interviewed and apparently offered McDermott, who would have been a well of mediocrity, first. So, yeah, it looks like he may have stumbled into a much better ending. I can say with certainty that if we were sitting here with Greg McDermott as the HC, there wouldn't be many happy people with that outcome. It would have been the equivalent to hiring Bo Pelini in November, 2011.

Interesting comment in Gerdeman's write-up at the Ozone today:
I mentioned earlier in the week that when you see three names lumped together in this search, there will be two put in there on purpose that you won't want so that it makes the third name (that you don't mind all that much) look more attractive. Ohio State reportedly interviewed three candidates -- McDermott, Chris Jent, and Chris Holtmann. I rest my case.
I didn't see the report that OSU interviewed those three, and only those three, candidates, but maybe Gene Smith planned it all out like that.
