2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

It was one guys opinion back then and some of it rings true enough all these years later enough to make it worthy of discussion imo.

Our athletic programs are performing quite well, top to bottom. We're in the lead for the Capital One Cup standings. If Matta's ailments do not occur, the basketball program would be in great shape as well. I understand that it's popular to scapegoat Gene Smith for what is currently taking place; and it's not inappropriate to criticize him for his handling of Matta's firing; but he's been on the job for over a decade. If even half of what that guy's opinion had merit, our programs would not be where they are now.

OTOH, how much of that is because he had the good fortune to preside over the football program being at all time high levels of popularity and revenue?

The 2011-2012 Bowl game situation was a major fiasco and now this is a major fiasco.

You could argue the best thing he's done is not fuck up the finances of an already rich program. This is one of the few, high profile, things he's actually had to do on his own and he's fucked it up something fierce.

It's easy to hire when Urban Meyer is available and its easy to hire for non revenue sports.... he's hiring for one of the 2 revenue sports.... screw this up... Finances take a hit...

Yep.

Urban Meyer just kind of fell into his lap, it was not some home run pitch that Gene cooked up to get him to take the job.

This being a situation where he actually has to work to find the next coach, has completely blown up in his face.

I'd actually take Steve Wojciechowski over Greg McDermott.

At least Wojo is younger.

If McDermott is the coach, then I cannot believe Northwestern has a better men's basketball coach than Ohio State (that argument could actually be made with Wojo too though).

Bring in Huggy Bear. No one would recruit the state better than he would for Ohio State. Given his age, he wouldn't be a long-term hire, but he would get the Ohio State program back on track from a talent and excitement standpoint
