the only thing that makes any rational sense whatsoever is that gene and thad weren't telling the truth during the presser. no, the only reasonable explanation is that those two got into a bitter argument and gene felt compelled to fire thad on the spot. the circumstantial evidence for that possibility is that the program was entertaining a recruit on tuesday. if gene fired thad on friday like he claimed, why would there be a recruit visit on tuesday?
of course, the default explanation for the timing is that gene is clueless. there's always that.
