2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

Never thought I'd say this, but I am liking Jesse Palmer today.

And F Herbie, I knew i'd say that one though
I'm surprised I haven't seen more criticism against Herbstreet after he said Bama would be the better #4. He was right in 2002 in his predictions for OSU-Miami and right again in 2007 when he lamented that "LSU is a terrible matchup for the Buckeyes, and USC in the Rose Bowl would be much better for them." I don't remember what he was saying about the 2006 championship game. But I think he's right this time.

Almost all the playoff games to this point have been boring blowouts. I think the CFP is thinking Bama has a better chance, with their starting linebackers healthy, to give Clemson a good game. It's bad geographically for ratings, but I think they value an exciting game more.

That's an interesting observation. Unfortunately, it happens to be the wrong one.

UCF @ Clemson
USC @ Oklahoma
Cheese @ Georgia
Ohio State @ Alabama

Wisconsin and Alabama don't belong...
Arguably UCF... they didn't really play anyone, but that's somewhat out of their control as a Mid Major.
And in an ideal situation neither USC nor Ohio State belong either imo... which is why I didn't care if we got passed up for somebody with a better resume. Dodging OOC opponents with FCS and getting boatraced by the 1 legit team they played all year in the last game is a bad resume even in this company.
But it was pretty obvious since last week that CFP wanted them when they kept MissSt ranked and somehow found a way to laughably put FresnoSt at 25.

The committee has shown the most important thing is the eye test. Throw out strength of schedule, quality wins, and conference championships. Gary Danielson's eye test is what matters
In my head I think they got it right but I just absolutely hate both the double speak and the bull[Mark May] rankings. Clearly the committee didn't think Wisconsin was one of the four best teams in the country. So why have them ranked there? I mean, if OSU beat Georgia by 6 and not Wisconsin, who do you think gets in then?

If you tell me a week earlier that the separation between Alabama and Ohio State is razor thin logic should dictate that a win over a playoff caliber team should get OSU in. All the committee had to do was say the margin between OSU and Alabama wasn't all that close LAST week. Hell all they really had to do was put Wisconsin 10th and OSU 12th or something like that.

At the end of the day the committee handled this incredibly poorly.

So much this. Don't lie to us to push ratings. Don't tell us metrics matter then pull out the eye test when it doesn't go your way.

Bama got in this year for pretty much the same reason we got in last year. Which, given our awful performance, did us no favors this year.

They got in for beating another Conference Champ at their house? Or was it for beating the cross-Division Champ at their house? Or for narrowly missing their Division spot in a last-minute loss rather than getting boat raced by their rival in the last game of the season?

They got in for having one loss, on the road in their rivalry game, after having been ranked #1 part of the season. And if you think the Buckeyes getting destroyed by Clemson after getting that bid last year didn't work against Ohio State this year, you're kidding yourself. We weren't getting the benefit of the doubt again.

We lost 2 games this year: one by 15 points at home and another by 31 to a five-loss team. Stop acting like we got screwed. We didn't.
