2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

Clemson is getting credit for beating teams high in ESPN's RPI or whatever the fuck that is. But, whatever. We just need to take care of our own business and hope that two of Clemson, ND, and OU slip up just once. I usually like Reece Davis, but he's a little overboard with OU's win at The Shoe. That game was only 17-13 at the end of the 3rd quarter...

Check out post #18 in this thread, homie.

You are a soothsayer.....

Thanks. I just pay attention to the committee. Predicting what the committee will do isn't all that tough, actually--then again, the scarlet and gray sunglasses on some on this site are nothing short of ridiculously dumb (e.g., check out the Zeke thread--there are some real dummies making assumptions they're too dumb to realize they're making). But again, thanks.

Definitely an SEC feel to this ranking. Auburn's loss to Clemson wasn't bad, but their loss to LSU is pretty aweful. LSU at 19 is a joke. Lost to Troy at home and Miss State by 30, and they haven't improved from either of those. If head to head matters, why isn't 2 loss LSU above 2 loss Auburn? And Miss State got boat raced twice (by number 1 team and number 14 team). Iowa State lost to unranked Iowa and unranked Texas, but is dominating the Big 12. Meanwhile ttun lost by 4 at a ranked rival and got boat raced to the number 7 team. TTUN would easily beat all of the above except probably Auburn. MSU has no business being ranked below LSU or Iowa State. After all, MSU managed to beat Iowa. I don't get it. A lot of sec teams just living off a name right now.

Definitely an anti big ten feel to these rankings. And it only gets better when MSU loses next week to Penn State and drops from the rankings. ttun will loose to wisconsin the week before we play them, so they'll definitely be unranked. Either that or they beat wisconsin and wisconsin plummets 15 spots. If we beat both of them, they'll both drop. When the final rankings come out it is very possible the only ranked team we would have beaten in Penn State.

The only nice thing I see in these rankings is Clemson is in the exact same boat. (Surprising to me because I think the ACC is one of the best conferences, where the middling teams can give you a run for your money). They will likely finish with zero top 15 wins and only 1-2 top 25 wins. ACC is similar to the B10, the conference is cannibalizing itself like the SEC used to, the names just aren't carrying the weight like it did for them.

Oklahoma we simply need to loose, their remaining schedule is higher ranked (I'm not going to say tougher, I think TCU and Okie State would be cake walks for our team right now).

OU being in front of us means if both win out they'll get in over us... there won't be two SEC teams so we really need ND or OU to trip up.

I think the probability of that is really high. ND goes to Miami and Stanford and OU still has Okie State and TCU

So what this tells us is that 99% of what the committee looks at is the SOS metric. Period.

OSU has a better win (#7 PSU vs #13 Va Tech) and a "less bad" loss than Clemson by a country mile (#5 OU vs unranked Syracuse) and they're 2 spots lower. So rather than being rewarded or punished by actual results on the field, teams are rewarded/punished based on the schedule that was made for them 3-4 years ago. Got it.

Um, 2014 is calling. It wonders if you weren't paying attention, or if you just don't have a good memory.
Not the same situation as 2014. We didn't have a home-loss to Baylor and TCU, whom we jumped in the final poll due to our 59-0 plunger job of Wisconsin. The committee specifically said today that the head-to-head a lot to the committee and that's why placed OU ahead of us. So, if OU wins out what reason would the committee have to jump us over OU?

Far too many people play the quantitative, science based angle. I happen to give the Committee a little credit. I believe they do care about the eye test. That’s why we got in for the ‘14 season and they obviously got it right. We play like a top 4 team from here out and are peaking in a CCG against Wiscy and I believe the same thing happens again. Dominate and we don’t get left out. Squeak out some ugly wins and maybe not.

OK, so I wanna "told you so." 1. Conference strength does matter. 2. Because Michigan is shit, we aren't gonna get a lift until the CCG against Wiscy and we better hope they take of Michigan. 3. Never underestimate TV's love of Notre Dame.

On the bright side, 1 thru 4 will narrow to 1 & 2.

If I'm Oklahoma I'm really pissed. Win by 2 TDs in the 'shoe and get ranked behind the team you beat.

And no, "just win out and we're in," is not going to win this year unless a whole lot of shit drops in games inside and outside the conference.
