2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

It means results were settled on the field, not in an everchanging behind-closed-doors cabal of some Athletic Directors, political appointees from Stanford, or washed-up ex-coaches.

Which is why once the Power 5 become the Super 4 - it's just a matter of time - I favor a 4 team playoff of those 4 conference champions. How each conference picks their champ is up to them. I don't care if they're the four "best" teams because we can't agree on "best" in the current CFP.

At least then you know what gets you in - win your conference. The champs of the ACC, SEC, PAC 16 and B1G XVI fight for the title.

i'm not too keen on a system where only 1 of 65 teams is able to win a title. it opens up a can worms. sure, it seems like a good idea at first blush, but programs like usf, boise state, and byu will just threaten to take a (temporary) pay cut and not play the super 4 teams. and the super 4 teams -- especially the powerhouses -- certainly want their cupcakes when the season lasts a possible 15 games.

Are there 65 teams able to win a title now, or do we just pretend teams outside of the power 5 and ND actually have a shot? I'd argue it's the latter. Teams like Boise, BYU, USF, UCF, etc.. would be candidates to join those super conferences. Those left out would still be just as eager for a fat pay day in the OOC schedule as they are now.

Just to add onto what Jake said ... this was the perfect year to put undefeated ucf in. Instead they chose another P5 school.

Relatively speaking, though, wouldn't dumping the cupcakes result in something approaching balanced scheduling across the power schools?

As the AD you lose money on the deal because cupcakes are always home games.

A balanced schedule of all P5 teams playing each other every week would be fun for fans but the AD loses 1-2 home games a year minimum which is a significant revenue hit.

(Now you could fix this with a universal rev share of the new and improved playoff deal if you believe it will make more money)

are you arguing for 18-team conferences? that's an absurd size. again, super conferences make theoretical sense, but they don't at all make practical sense.

I'm not arguing for super conferences at all, but the scenarios I've seen were 4 conferences comprised of 16 teams each. I think it's ridiculous, but I think that's where the money will lead things.

If/when that happens then, yes, sign me up for the four champions having a playoff. No more comparing resumes to argue who the "best" teams are, no more "eye test" bullshit, just cut and dried. Win your conference or STFU.

Schedule whatever else your little heart desires, but make at least 75% of your games be conference games (preferably 10 of 12).

The CFP will never expand beyond (4) teams. Repeating, the CFP will never expand so you can stop arguing. Just saved y'all a lot of time better spent elsewhere.

My perfect scenario is the Cotton Bowl being the highest rated game w/the (2) playoff games coming in a distant 2nd and third. This may lead to the disbanding of the committee and starting from scratch. Or better yet returning to the BCS format. On second thought, go back to the total chaos scenario before the BCS where the AP, coaches, etc. decided the NC. IOW, they all suck in their own unique way! Expanding to (8) teams would only increase the suck factor exponentially.

On the upside only one of these totally flawed teams: 'bama/Tigers/Sooners/'dogs will win the 2017 NC by default.

As mentioned a couple times previously hopefully all "5" conference champions finish 13-0 next year along w/an undefeated ND. One, get to hear greedy domers whine incessantly about being left out. Two, the committee may implode!

btw, did I mention the CFP will never expand?

FSU may not be Bowl Eligible
Overview
Florida State is scheduled to play in a record 36th consecutive bowl game, the Independence Bowl, against Southern Miss on December 27. Their 6-6 record includes a win over Delaware State, an FCS program. For an FCS opponent to be countable towards bowl eligibility, the FCS program must have awarded at least 90% of the FCS scholarship limit. After our own investigation, we have determined and confirmed that Delaware State has not met the 90% threshold set by the NCAA. As a result, Florida State's bowl countable record is 5-6, thus making them ineligible for a bowl game this season. At present, there are three other bowl eligible teams that were not offered a game and it would be unprecedented for a team to go bowling without either eligibility or a waiver while teams who are eligible stay home.

/r/CFB is the first to report on this after an extended investigation into the number of football scholarships at Delaware State. It is important to note that Delaware State is at no fault here, having complied with NCAA rules regarding scholarships and awards. Based on current NCAA rules, Florida State cannot count a win over Delaware State towards bowl eligibility. Given that the Independence Bowl is a week away, there are several options available with most resulting in Florida State playing in this bowl. However, if they do so, they may do so without being bowl eligible.

Not that I expect anything to actually come of this, but if anything does... :slappy:

Also, bets that Jimbo tipped off the mod that posted this?

Man...Free Shoes indeed...this is something else. All they care about is going to the bowl game.

Almost like a couple years ago when my Huskers were able to go bowling at 5-6 in year 1 of the Mr. Rodgers era...

As we get closer and closer to the game on Monday, the inevitable dread that comes with being a sports fan from Georgia is starting to pour in.

The Falcons are going to lose to Carolina and be knocked out of the playoffs
Georgia is going to lose to Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl

And this will be me on Tuesday morning:
