2017 CFB Bowl Games Open Thread

because the powers that be make money no matter what happens on the field

professional refs would just be an added expense

(remember, this is a business that doesn't have to pay for labor)

Refs get paid, some as much as $3,000/game. What would a "professional ref" be, and please don't say a full-time job?

But putting money into training them might help.

Refs are trained. I used to be an umpire. I had to complete training and pass tests. They don't just take guys out of the crowd.

What would help a lot is fines or suspensions for fucking up badly. You know actual consequences for being bad at your job.

Ever made a mistake at your job? How much were you fined? Better still, how much are you going to fine a guy making $2,000/game, $3,000 if he's lucky? If it's a large chunk of his pay, good luck finding anyone to bother taking that gig.

Professional athletes train year round, make lots of money, and still make mistakes. Refs are going to make mistakes, too.

To what would you attribute the disparity in how the targeting rule is enforced across different conferences? The rule is the rule, but yet inconsistent interpretation exists even with replay. What can be done to improve this? We see it and have discussed it in multiple threads this season.

Yes they are going to make mistakes. I'm not talking about simple mistakes. I'm talking about out and out not knowing the rules. Most people screw up occasionally yes. Buy those that screw up repeatedly or very severely go on some sort of probation or lose their jobs. There seems to be no consequences for screwing up as a ref in sports other then you don't get to ref a big money bowl game or in the playoffs. That's a big problem. Why would a majority of people work to improve the standard of work at their job if there are very little consequences for being bad at it? Sure you don't go overboard and punish every little mistake but the big blantent ones should be handled in some way other than a ya we screwed up and nothing else happens.

It was even stupider for him to push off a ref and look like he said keep your fucking hands off of me.

Is that what he said? We know that?

The ref initiated the contact, unnecessarily. His ego ejected the player. That's poor officiating.

Officials are not supposed to instigate, unless they're MLB umps (who are simply ridiculous) or TV Ted.
