2017 CFB Bowl Games Open Thread

Mayfield/Swinney lost, both crushing defeats in their own way, so there is that. Saban has my respect for his consistent excellence, but do wish he would play a really, really good non-conference game on the road occasionally er every 4/5 years. :biggrin2: Regardless of the 'dogs/'bama's good fortune of making the championship game, the bloom is totally off the rose re: the SEC:

SC 9-4
KY 7-6
MO 7-6
FL 4-7
Vandy 5-7
TN 4-8
Auburn 10-4
LSU 9-4
MS St. 9-4
TX A&M 7-6
Ole Miss 6-6
AR 4-8

but, but, but their annual high quality non-conference schedule(s) !!! ok, never mind ...

The 8 game conference schedule basically = +1 win for basically the whole conference......considering they don't play that 9th conference game against eachother.......and we know they arent using that extra OOC game to schedule anyone worth a damn, which by eye tests makes the conference look a bit better than it actually is.

I love how Bama/Georgia fans were chanting S-E-C S-E-C! at the end of their games. I'm fairly sure the bottom feeders of the conference could give a shit there's 2 SEC teams in the NC. Especially Auburn. Considering they beat both and Bama/GA are their biggest rivals. If scUM & the Pedsters were in the NC, I certainly wouldn't be chanting B1G B1G! I'd be embarrassed my conference was represented in that way.

Good thing it'll never happen.

P.S. Also won't be watching. Fuck that shit.

I'm not sure why so many people over estimated Clemson this year.

To me they were "meh" all season. They basically "earned" the right to be in the playoff by escaping with only 1 loss.

They caught Auburn early in the season and won a sloppy game before Auburn sort of got rolling finally.

Miami's record was impressive but I don't think they are as good as the record looked. FSU and Ville were dookie this year and the rest of the ACC as a whole was a flop.

The drop off from Watson to Bryant was huge. He only threw 13 TD/8 INT and while he ran for 600 yards only averaged 3.5 YPC

Clemson was the 2014 FSU of this year...

Benefit of the doubt because reigning NC
Played underwhelmingly all year
Got into the playoff despite really deserving to be there

Quite frankly, there's no way to know if Bama belonged because Clemson certainly didn't. The committee has underestimated how unpredictable college football is. They keep rolling the dice on things like Bama's automatic undefeated season, Wisconsin beating tOSU and now this disaster.

They could've straight up avoided this by having Bama play GA in the Semi-Finals. Or, just put UCF in the Playoff.

However, regarding the latter... it's really not their fault as UCF hadn't played anyone until their bowl game and by then it was too late to know.

The CFP was designed to give people the sense that the tournament champion was the "real" champ.

If you are looking for certainty in your champion, paradoxically, the more teams you add to a playoff the more you are going to be unnerved by the realization that any given team can win on any given day.

Yep.

a 8 team playoff with Auto Bids basically kills college football as it is and makes it NFL Jr.

hypothetically speaking. Nebraska could make the B1G title game at 8-4 one season......they happen to win the B1G title game. They are in the playoff. Catch fire at the right time and win a few games and they are on the doorstep of a national championship with 4 losses.

That system would also make big time OOC games totally vanish. What is the point of risking injury actually having to play tough teams ahead of your conference schedule when all you have to do is win your conference to get into the dance.

To hit on your point about we may never know if Alabama truly was one of the best 4 teams in the playoff, I take into considering of Saban getting more than a week to prepare as well. He's 27-7 with more than a week before a game with an average win of 30-11, those 7 losses are an average of a 7 point loss. Had this game been played a week later maybe it's not as much of a shutout win for them. As soon as Alabama was announced as the 4 seed I immediately knew they were going to shut down Clemson's offense. Give Saban more than a week to prepare and you're safe to put your money on him to win majority of the time.

I still can't believe Clemson was seeded #1 to begin with.
