2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

Well it won't happen right now... expect movement if we lay an egg offensively though against Clemson which I think happens to some extent.

Oddly it may be Clemson again that gets us a new improved coordinator. They exposed Whethers in 13' and they'll probably expose Warriner/Beck this year to be honest.

Withers took the job for James Madison 2 weeks before the Clemson game. Herman look the Houston job on December 10th. I could see Urban telling Tim Beck to look for a HC job and if Helfrich is the up for the job, he will be announced after Beck finds somewhere else to coach.

Helfrich for OC?
I was thinking the same, and mentioned it in another thread. But the more I looked up Helfrich, the more I question if his recruiting background will fit OSU. He may be able to run a decent offense, but we all know Urban cherishes guys that not only can coach, but can recruit as well. And though his game plans leave a lot to be desired, Beck is a hell of a recruiter

This is exactly my thought. Buckeye nation is harboring a grudge against Beck WAY too much in my opinion. Dude has done major work bringing current/future QB talent. It was unrealistic to think he could step in to a new offensive scheme with a very tenuous QB situation between CJ and JT and expect much else. That would have been a tough gig. So, let the Beck hatred subside is my opinion. If coach Ed wants to be a head coach and gets a good offer and someone like Helfrich came in to replace him with Beck staying on board I don't know that I would be that opposed to it. Especially because it would obviously be Urbs decision - one which I will always support. If Urb hasn't earned my absolute trust no one will.

I'll say it again I want nothing to do with Helfrich, average to below average recruiter, no recruiting ties to a major hotbeds. Chip ran the offense when he was there then Scott Frost seemed to run the offense, his first season without Frost or Kelly and he's 4-8... am I over simplifying things yep but he is simply a do not want for me.

It's not hatred. The guy simply has a reasonably long track record of "developing" QBs who don't throw well. Also, his recruiting prowess, while impressive, is largely in Texas and I suspect that Herman's going to make it a hell of a lot harder to get much there in the future no matter who's recruiting for OSU.

Good points but I personally don't have enough data to judge him on developing QBs for his whole career let alone at tOSU. For one I think that is hard to quantify in general and secondly - way too many factors for that with his short time here. Is he supposed to magically make JTs arm stronger, give him a decent RT or seasoned WRs who can run good routes and create seperation? I'm not a Beck fan but I think he is being judged on some questionable metrics.

True on Texas recruiting but Maryland, Vegas and Georgia don't apply.

Edit: I'll also add that a large chunk of the fanbase think he alone is responsible for a lot of the playcalling which is absolutely incorrect. As much as it is hard to say - Urb has had a big say, if not the sole call in many of the most frustrating play calls during the past few years.

I'm not one of the people who claims to know enough about how the play calling is done to rip him on that. But I've got both eyes and more than enough data points to feel justified in believing that the QBs he coaches don't improve much, if at all, at throwing the football.

We do not need a electric recruiter, IMO we have already sacrificed enough developers for those who can dominate the recruiting trail... we need a developer and another offensive mind that can get us back on track. Helfrich is a ex head coach of a national championship contender and while maybe he's not an elite recruiter but perhaps it's more he's a better recruiter when he has a smaller role within the organization.

Some people aren't meant to be the be all end all recruiter like an Urban Meyer. Some are better role players and behind the scenes type of guy. Also I'm confident we all agree we would want Helfrich over Beck right?
