2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

After hearing UFM I understand why we didn't press to work on the throw game.

Defense is playing well, we have a lead, and it's windy just win the game. He also laminated we missed a guy open by 10 yards and also by about 8 yards wide open. He's right if we hit that it's a route and JT has close to 200 yards on a better percent

I'm with Jax... for the moment. I'd prefer that JTB not have that many carries, but if we're running the read-option and he reads the keep, gets first downs, 137 yds, and scores, I'm not going to bitch too much. He doesn't run recklessly or erratically. He seems under control and doesn't risk injury by being stupid. Some games you just have to go with your hoss; Tebow or JTB and let them win the game so you can move on. For now, I'm inclined to see this one as testament to the team's grit and keep moving forward, like the State Penn game a couple of years ago. Wisconsin will tell us a lot about ourselves.

I thought Oklahoma was going to tell us a lot about ourselves... And it did

They attempted 21 passes yesterday

They are averaging 27.6 attempts per game for the season which is up from 25 the previous season.

It's not like 21 is a huge deviation from the norm. Barrett was just off (and had a few drops) and it was obvious so, imo, they did the right thing and went run heavy. Win the game however you need to win it and work on what's wrong in practice.

This is pretty much what Urban said in his presser earlier today

:slappy:

I just find this amusing is all. I mean he can run pretty good.

He does run well, but the point is with Weber and Samuel (and even Dontre on occasion) he shouldn't have to carry the load. 26/50 carries going to him vs Indiana was meh. He did gain 137 yards so I suppose it was "working" but it would suck for him to get beat up and injured on account of too much running burden being placed on him.

Yeah I get that. I don't want JT , or anyone else to get hurt for that matter. I just think he's a pretty good runner. He seems to find yardage when there doesn't seem to be any.

URBAN MEYER, J.T. BARRETT CLAIM ISSUES IN OHIO STATE PASSING GAME RESULT FROM FIXABLE MISTAKES

75196_h.jpg,qitok=UccPU75u.pagespeed.ce.Nr-K5QjlqG.jpg

J. T. Barrett strolled to the interview scrum with Bose headphones resting atop his head and his eyes glued to his iPhone. He offered a jovial "Hello" as he sat down to take questions from a horde of reporters, his normal Monday routine.

He knew which questions were about to come his way, mainly revolving around the fact he completed only 9-of-21 passes on Saturday for 93 yards—the third-lowest output of his career for a game in which he started. Barrett turned off the bass-driven tones of PartyNextDoor, sat his personal items down and began to give his side of why the Buckeyes struggled so mightily to throw the ball two days earlier. There were issues, but Ohio State still beat a solid Indiana squad by three touchdowns.

“I think on offense in particular, it was more of, I guess there were times when we did have everyone on the same page and that's when we did have more successful plays of course but we were in some good plays a lot of times,” Barrett said. “And whether it be me messing up on an assignment or a read or a receiver messing up, or an O-linemen messing up, we just weren't clicking on all cylinders on all units at all times and I think that's often times what was the problem.”

Barrett shouldered the blame immediately after the game on Saturday. Urban Meyer called the lack of passing yards "alarming," a claim he rescinded on Monday a bit after viewing the film. Barrett did too; he instead claimed the mistakes are all fixable, gave credit to Indiana's defensive backs and didn't indict any position for a rough day through the air.

“Alarming is probably a little overreactive, but we've just got to get to practice and get it better,” Meyer said. “You never want to take credit away from the team you played. It was a good team we played.”

“I think it was just this week and that was a good team that we faced. I think our game plan was good, we just missed on those plays and just everybody on a whole on offense,” Barrett said. “Not just one particular group.”

Ohio State’s passing game took a step back against Indiana

upload_2016-10-11_11-29-45.png

If there is one common denominator with every loss of the Urban Meyer era, it would be the abundance of designed quarterback runs and scrambles. Whether it were the two losses in 2013 against Michigan State and Clemson, the 2014 loss at Virginia Tech or the 2015 loss against Michigan State, the most common number on the quarterback chart below would be the amount of times that the quarterback runs the ball. Good things usually happen to an Urban Meyer-led Buckeye team when there is balance on offense, meaning their designed runs stay below double digits and the scrambles stay below four-or-five — based on the average number of plays that they run.

If you did not know the score and only read J.T. Barrett’s chart below, you would think they lost the game. The passing game was as bad as it’s ever been, but the Buckeyes beat Indiana with talent, their defense and a running game that racked up 290 yards on 50 carries. If Barrett’s chart looks like this next week against Wisconsin, or in the future against Nebraska or Michigan, they’ll get knocked off.

Here’s a good example:

Barrett sees the end crashing down on Mike Weber and uses his patience to hold the ball at the mesh point, forcing the end to completely commit to Weber.
