2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

What's up with Billy Price...
I'm guessing he's had more penalties than any other OL.. and maybe more than all the other OLs combined
He's either fabulous or barely mediocre
inconsistent.. which is NOT what I expected this year

They attempted 21 passes yesterday

They are averaging 27.6 attempts per game for the season which is up from 25 the previous season.

It's not like 21 is a huge deviation from the norm. Barrett was just off (and had a few drops) and it was obvious so, imo, they did the right thing and went run heavy. Win the game however you need to win it and work on what's wrong in practice.
Yeah 20 or so attempts is usually about where we've always been under Meyer. I honestly don't think the playcalling was THAT bad, just think we didn't execute. I definitely would have liked to get Samuel more touches but I have no clue if the defense was doing anything to prevent that. If JT hits on a couple more of those deep balls, we're probably talking about his potential Heisman status.

Just for me there's other players who are better at running the ball then JT. We are going to face good defenses again (starting this week) and we've got to find a way to break 200 passing IMO

I also would chose to run for 300 instead of passing for 300 but one day soon we will face a team where running for 300 may be asking too much and then what? If you continuously fall back to your perceived strength you will never get better at what you struggle with. Which is throwing the ball against good defenses.

To me I don't think it's the players. To me the staff and the play calling just gets a bit tight when they know they're playing a semi talented defense. We can do it against garbage teams with ease so why not against some of the better teams.

If we see the same stuff against Wisconsin then I might be inclined to agree with you. I just think it's too big of a conclusion to draw from this one game.

They get to throw the ball against a good defense every day in practice. If something isn't there one day, don't force it. just win the game. That is what separates the championship caliber teams, they can win the game by whatever means necessary. paper tigers are the teams who lose the first time they get their primary means of attack taken away by the opponent.

JT had a brain fart day.. held on way too long too many times.. and when the WR was wide open deep; threw short... or threw no where near...

There were still numerous bad calls... on the deep ball to start the game (no PI on Indiana); the PI on Malik; the holding call on Fada.. and that below the knee on Maliks TD (my TV said the block started at the thigh)

The way we are running, the Play Action pass should always be devastating to defenses. We either dont do it or its half-assed where it's not believable in the action. Take some pressure off the QB with the confusion to the defense. I like the cross action that is happening in the backfield and we are getting some nice sweep plays but then we forget to just let our horse get his 6 or 7 up the gut when they start playing that motion. I was getting very frustrated with our tendency to do the same things in the same situations all day and Indiana was owning us in the strategy area. Got outcoached when we got lazy. The athletes still won the game but against Wisky, scUM and Bama, we wont have that luxury.

That's exactly what I mean... we can run the ball on anyone I'm convinced but sooner or later you're going to have to use that set up to mix in some SMART passes to keep people honest.

I'm just saying they saw JT struggling a bit so why not just call a few simple throws to get his head right.

JT certainly missed a few players but I didn't think the type of throws were constructive for a QB who just was having trouble getting a rythme.

Loved the play calling in the MSU game in 14 for example. Came out and threw some quick hitters and then later in the game hit them with longer stuff.

He's always been a penalty factory, mostly false starts despite lining up next to the football.
