2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

OHIO STATE'S OFFENSE IS RUN-HEAVY RIGHT NOW AND URBAN MEYER KNOWS AT SOME POINT THAT WILL NEED TO CHANGE

74944_h.jpg,qitok=TMuH1_41.pagespeed.ce.5r3rSMhxqO.jpg

Urban Meyer knows it is coming.

"We're going to face some teams that can stop the run," he said Monday.

Until then, though, Ohio State is fine with its somewhat unbalanced offensive attack.

The Buckeyes are running the ball at an impressive rate. Their 332 yards per game on the ground rank third nationally and only trails Army and New Mexico. Quarterback J.T. Barrett, running back Mike Weber and H-back Curtis Samuel make up a versatile three-headed monster that's been a handful for opposing defenses to try and contain.

But Meyer knows at some point he's going to need even more from his offense.

"I'll even stare at our scoreboard and see certain times of the game that we have to — because it'll come back," he said. "You can't say we're going to run the ball because at some point we learned a lesson in that rainstorm last year against Michigan State. You can stop the run."

Let's be clear: Ohio State has been able to throw the ball this year, too. The Buckeyes are averaging 244.3 yards per game through the air — a number that's very close to the 250 yards Meyer targets for his passing game — and Barrett has thrown 14 touchdown passes against only two interceptions.

At some point, though, Meyer feels his team may need to win a game through the air rather than on the ground.

Ohio State hosts Indiana on Saturday and the Hoosiers have the nation's 51st-ranked run defense, allowing 139.5 yards per game on the ground. The Buckeyes should be able to run the ball with relative ease in that one.

But in two weeks Ohio State travels to Madison for a date with No. 11 Wisconsin. Coincidentally, the Badgers also rank 11th in the country in rush defense, allowing just 90.4 yards per game on the ground.

Perhaps it's then when the Buckeyes will need their offensive balance.

“I think we’re best when we're just balanced in our attack," Barrett said. "The offensive line, they’re doing a great job of allowing that to happen. I think coach Meyer says it best, the way our team runs is through the offensive line. When they play well, we play well. I think they’re doing a great job and coach Stud is getting them guys ready to go each and every week and I think that’s definitely driving our offense.”

OHIO STATE OFFENSIVE LINE EMBRACING NO TALK, JUST WORK MENTALITY

75016_h.jpg,qitok=Rj7vo2r3.pagespeed.ce.TcPSi4WldI.jpg

Marshawn Lynch videos must be streaming constantly in the Ohio State offensive line meeting room this season.

No, the five starters and young guys behind them know they're never going to be able to run the football like the former Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl-winning running back. But they are taking one of Lynch's most famous soundbites to heart early in the 2016 season.

"I think they're just hard working guys,” line coach Greg Studrawa said after practice Wednesday. “They're kind of taking the role of their leader. You know Pat (Elflein), he's not a rah-rah guy, he's not a big-time talker. He just goes about his business, go back to the huddle and do it again.”

“We're not going to do no talking. We're about that action,” sophomore right tackle Isaiah Prince said. “We're going to talk on the field. We're not going to do no verbal talking.”

I may get killed for this but whatever this is just for a convo starter.

When I look at this year's defense with Schiano now running the show and you see the production of the unit I can't help but think our offense really needs that bell cow coordinator so to speak.

They're doing a fine job this year particularly against lesser teams but so far for two years when the going gets tough the tough gets JT running the ball too much. Any hiccups in the throw game early and they absolutely abandon it. To me the two coordinators have shown no comfort if JT gets pressured or hurried or if he has trouble early finding a rhythm.

Give him a pop pass, a jet sweep pass, a slant, a tailback screen, anything to get him going. I promise you we cannot work out the kinks with our passing game when JT is running over linebackers 23 times a game.

I'll still be concerned if we win next weekend if it means we throw for 150 yards again while rushing for 300.

I hope I don't catch flack for this but I also think the starting TE just doesn't look like he wants it. Seems to shy away from blocking and contact to the extent we need from him. Seems like a fine athlete but not sure he has the passion and intensity some of the other players show. Not to mention that pass late in the game that was very catchable. Seems like I saw another TE (88?) late in the game..probably as result of that dropped pass.

I'm not sure how it was at Florida but this just seems to be Urban Meyer's MO. Even Tom Herman's offenses generally felt like they'd resort to just running the QB if things weren't going well. I'd definitely rather have balance, but if it's a choice between throwing for 300 yards or running for 300 yards, I choose running every time personally. Nothing demoralizes an opponent more than know you're going to run it right up the middle and there's not a damn thing they can do to stop it. I want my opponents beaten and broken, not dazzled.

Yeah it definitely seems like Meyer's preference to run the ball more often and be conservative in that aspect, and it makes sense with the rushing talent and just general focus of the offense. I think I just expected some bigger improvements with the passing game with JT returning and better focus after the struggles last year. Not that it's terrible. Just not where I thought it'd be.

You mentioned in a another thread how JT can go from sub 100 yard games to 300+ against very good teams and that's very true. Just hope he can find more consistency as the year goes on and finds his form.

Baugh definitely pissed me off several times today...whiffed on a block (more like he was lackadaisical) that cost us a first down, along with the drop.

I'm willing to chalk the whole thing up to just one bad game. If they can't pass worth a shit vs Wisconsin then I'll be willing to talk systemic issues.

As far as the coaches abandoning the pass too quickly, that is pretty much the exact opposite argument we all had in the last game like this vs MSU, so no. I am not buying it.

Offense had a bad day vs a decent opponent. Defense and special teams stepped up and the team won by 3 TD's.

Its ok to have a shit play calling day, we got lucky it was against Indiana (which has given us trouble). I'm with you, if the lack of a passing attack and the fact they ignored Samuel (9 touches.... Zeke vs MSU esk but we won) continue I will be alarmed.

It does seem like any time there is a bit of wind Warriner/Beck abandon the pass like its a bad penny. I know you don't want to make mistakes but if Barrett is the QB they all rave about put the ball in his hands and trust him to make the right throws.

Agreed - on offense I've only seen one guy consistently give a lack of effort on blocks and it's come back to bite us a couple times and that is Baugh....he has no desire to block and we don't have many options elsewhere. He gator armed the INT throw as well....when we go up against Wiscy on the road, even MSU, Nebraska, Michigan they are going to bring heat against him, let's hope he learns quickly.

They attempted 21 passes yesterday

They are averaging 27.6 attempts per game for the season which is up from 25 the previous season.

It's not like 21 is a huge deviation from the norm. Barrett was just off (and had a few drops) and it was obvious so, imo, they did the right thing and went run heavy. Win the game however you need to win it and work on what's wrong in practice.
