2016 Fall Camp Discussion

Fall Camp Insider: Buckeye Freshmen Take to the Field for the First Time

OSU%20Freshman%20Practice.jpg

Fall camp got underway for the Buckeyes on Sunday, as the OSU freshmen had the practice fields to themselves in the morning. The veterans will practice later in the afternoon.

It wasn't just the true freshmen who were working, however, as they were joined by a handful of redshirt freshmen like defensive tackle Joshua Alabi, wide receiver Alex Stump, and offensive guard Matthew Burrell.

Offensive lineman Michael Jordan, running back Antonio Williams and wide receiver Austin Mack were not spotted in attendance, likely because they have already "graduated" to the veteran practice squad.

Strip, Scoop and Score

The Buckeye defensive coaches were working with the linebackers and defensive backs on a drill where they practice rushing the quarterback from the edge, then strip him of the football, then get behind the football to scoop it up, and then take off running for the end zone. You can watch the drill below.

OHIO STATE PRACTICE NOTEBOOK: FRESHMEN TAKE FIELD FOR FIRST TIME AT WOODY HAYES ATHLETIC CENTER

72757_h.jpg,qitok=8J2wx6qG.pagespeed.ce.BpSYYuWQvF.jpg

Under sunny skies and with a heavy dew beneath their cleats, Ohio State's freshmen, newcomers and specialists took the practice field for the first time as Buckeyes on Sunday morning at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

The program allowed media to watch the first four sessions of the workout, which largely consisted of stretching and individual drills. With coaches yelling and trainers forcing water down their throats, the players got their first taste of what it is like to be a Buckeye.

Notes:

  • Offensive lineman Michael Jordan and wide receiver Austin Mack did not practice this morning. They will workout in the afternoon session with the upperclassmen, which begins around 3:30 p.m.
  • Redshirt freshmen that attended practice this morning: Matthew Burrell, Joshua Alabi and Alex Stump
  • The first four upperclassmen to come out and watch the younger guys work out were Noah Brown, Cam Burrows, Damon Webb and James Clark
  • Sam Hubbard followed shortly thereafter and went straight to the corner of the grass field that housed Larry Johnson's defensive line. His eyes focused mostly on Nick Bosa.
  • Speaking of Bosa, he looks exactly like his older brother, Joey. His mannerisms, the way he walks, the way he runs, they way he tears through drills — it is almost eerie. The only difference is Nick had a large brace on his right knee and is a few inches shorter than Joey.
  • Bosa also appears to be the real deal. His body is much more developed than your typical freshman and he led most of the individual defensive line drills followed closely by Jonathon Cooper.

Ohio State's upperclassmen take the field at approximately 3:30 p.m. Sunday. A press conference with head coach Urban Meyer and quarterback J.T. Barrett is scheduled for shortly thereafter around 5:35 p.m.

According to this writer Antonio Williams did not practice in the morning..
That means there were three true freshmen who weren't out there in the morning - likely because the Buckeyes aren't thinking of them as freshmen.

• Offensive lineman Michael Jordan
• Running back Antonio Williams
• Receiver Austin Mack.
Every young Buckeye who practiced Sunday morning - and the freshmen who will work with Ohio State veterans

When's the last time a WR made a real impact as a true freshman? I can't think of one. Ginn made an impact on the football field, but as a WR he only had 25 catches and 2 TD's.

Was Boston a true freshman or did he red shirt? He had 33 catches and 7 TD's.

OK, I thought that I could answer that. I was at the 1997 Rose Bowl and still have my program; it just lists him as a Freshman (unfortunately nobody is listed as a redshirt anything). However, I did find a piece of paper in the program (that I don't remember even getting):

Based on this picture that was on the internet, Copper's autograph looks pretty legit:

Anybody have any idea who the 2nd (lower) autograph is?
