2016 Fall Camp Discussion

IT REMAINS TOO EARLY FOR URBAN MEYER TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF TEAM OHIO STATE WILL HAVE IN 2016

Ohio State faces an entirely different mountain to climb ahead of Urban Meyer's fifth season in Columbus than it did last year at this time, but the head coach remains unsure what kind of team he'll have to scale it.

"I think last year was a veteran group so if I ever have another veteran group I'll learn from that," Meyer said Sunday. "This is a lot like '14."

Names like Ezekiel Elliott, J.T. Barrett, Darron Lee, Eli Apple and others made up the roster ahead of Ohio State's 2014 season, one in which it won the national championship. This year's team is even younger than that, which is why Meyer said it's going to take a few weeks to truly know if it will reach its potential. Things have to get hard first.

“THIS ONE FEELS DIFFERENT. I DON'T WANT TO SCREW IT UP.”– URBAN MEYER ON 2016 FALL CAMP

"I'm counting on practice 12 is going to be that line of demarcation where I'll tell you what kind of team we'll have," Meyer said. "When it gets tough and hard, and they kind of don't like it and they turn around and look for guys like Taylor Decker and Darron Lee and Josh Perry, we'll be average.

"If we see some guys step up like we did in '14 and last year, then we have a chance to be special. Because athleticism is not an issue."

  • Meyer called it a "good first day" for Ohio State. He said the mantra for the 2016 season is "The Edge – where the average stops and the elite begins."
  • More on the 2016 slogan of "The Edge" is all about getting some intensity and "human spirit" going through his team so it takes pride in Ohio State. The theme of each season is carefully thought out and calculated, Meyer said.

The Edge....:oh:....:io:

The Edge... "What one man can do, another can do!"

(seriously this clip is amazing, one of my all time favorites)

After looking at the latest depth chart after yesterday's practice a couple observations.

J. Holmes is now 275 pounds that's much bigger then I remember him being. Also I feel much better about the DL interior then I did weeks ago. Both starters over 295 and Hill being over 300 which is great considering I think Sprinkle is a really lean 295.

Erik Smith is now number 34 too it appears.

When's the last time a WR made a real impact as a true freshman? I can't think of one. Ginn made an impact on the football field, but as a WR he only had 25 catches and 2 TD's.
"Real impact" would be an exaggeration, but I thought Duron Carter had one of the more promising true freshman seasons for an OSU wideout in the past 20 years. His stats were modest, but solid: 13 catches for 176 yards and a touchdown.

Devin Smith had a slightly better true freshman season, at least statistically. And I'm inclined to give him the "real impact" label, if only for the game winning 40 yard TD catch, from Miller, with 20 seconds left against #12 Wisconsin in 2011.

URBAN MEYER SENSES DIFFERENCE IN YOUNG PLAYERS WITH “A MONSTER” NO LONGER IN PLACE

Ohio State’s 2016 recruiting class — headlined by the likes of Nick Bosa, Jonathon Cooper, Demario McCall and others — finished as the No. 4-ranked recruiting class in the country, according to 247Sports’ composite ratings. On Sunday, that group took the field for its first-ever fall camp practice.

Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer liked what he saw.

“A very impressive first-year group of players that went out this morning,” Meyer said after Day 1 of fall camp. “I say this often, but I hope they all play. There will certainly be some of them who play.”

Meyer’s right: He does often say how much he hates to redshirt freshmen. But the reality is, since he’s arrived at Ohio State, most of the time he has redshirted the majority of his freshman class.

Last season, the Buckeyes redshirted an eye-opening 21 members of their 2015 recruiting class. Only Jerome Baker, Eric Glover-Williams, Isaiah Prince and Denzel Ward saw playing time last fall.

Meyer said Sunday there may have been a reason for that, though.

“Last year’s group was not very mature for whatever reason,” the Buckeyes head coach said. “There’s a lot of reasons because they’re not bad people, but the problem is they looked in front of them and saw a monster that they couldn’t beat out.

“What’s the human nature?” Meyer continued. “It’s, ‘I’m not going to beat that guy out so I’m going to act like an 18-year-old.’”

Believe this is DeMario McCall (Scarlet #30) vs. Rodjay Burns (Gray #29).

There's a couple more circle drill clips on OhioStateFootball snapchat as well.
