2016 Fall Camp Discussion

I'll go with over a thousand, including the bowl game and certainly if we make the playoffs and win the first. JT's going to have a lot of yards this season, though. It won't be anything like last year on the Zeke-train.

THE FEELING SURROUNDING OHIO STATE AS FALL CAMP NEARS IS MUCH DIFFERENT IN 2016

72692_h.jpg,qitok=qMXqu6nM.pagespeed.ce.NwYnELQkeU.jpg

As Ohio State checked into its team hotel for call camp last August, media members, recorders and cameras lined the walkway to the entrance. There were some fans there, too. It seemed quite a few people wanted to get a glimpse of the defending national champions.

Cardale Jones donned a Ronda Rousey T-shirt on the eve of the Buckeyes’ often-discussed quarterback battle. Joey Bosa, fresh off the announcement of his Week 1 suspension, quietly walked by with a piercing stare. Some players had their iPhones out and documented the experience on Snapchat. Others were followed around by Big Ten Network cameras as they filmed ‘Scarlet and Gray Days.’

Braxton Miller showed up with a drone. It was quite the spectacle.

And while coverage of the 2016 camp check-in will be similar Saturday when Ohio State reports, many of the faces arriving will be different.

The likes of Bosa, Jones, Ezekiel Elliott, Darron Lee, Taylor Decker and more all are gone now and the Buckeyes — with 44 players on the roster who have never played in a college football game — are one of the youngest teams in the country. A year ago, the only real unknown about Ohio State was the quarterback position. This season, it feels like that’s the only sure thing.

This 2016 version of the Buckeyes is totally different than last year’s, but head coach Urban Meyer — who is set to enter his fifth season at the helm — kind of likes it that way.

“It’s a free-for-all for playing time,” Meyer said at Big Ten Media Days.

OHIO STATE FRESHMEN TO ENDURE MAJOR ADJUSTMENT PERIOD WITH START OF TRAINING CAMP

72718_h.jpg

Though he doesn't like to talk about it much, J.T. Barrett will admit it when someone asks about it: He was not too fond of Ohio State when his first training camp as a Buckeye rolled around.

"I remember sitting in my bed, looking up and they come knock on your door at 5 a.m. — 'We got a two-a-day today,'" Barrett recalled at Big Ten Media Days last week. "And I said, 'Man, do I love football?' At the time I told myself, 'Nah not really.'"

Barrett enrolled in January 2013 as part of Meyer's vaunted second recruiting class, one that contained names like current NFL players Ezekiel Elliott, Vonn Bell, Jalin Marshall, Joey Bosa, Eli Apple and Darron Lee. Not all of them graduated high school early but each dealt with that daybreak knock on the door at the team hotel from Mickey Marotti and his strength staff signaling it was time for practice.

That's quite an adjustment for anybody. Ohio State's 2016 recruiting class is set to endure it Sunday.

"I can still remember the days, me and Eli came in together. Graduated high school early, in the dorms, talking about how awful we hated Ohio State," Barrett said. "It's just rough for young guys, especially when you come from a place where in your city, your town, you're the best and then you start back over. Especially the way we do at Ohio State — it's not easy."

Hate is an extremely strong word, especially when it comes from the guy slated to be your team's leader and starting quarterback the season after losing 12 draft picks and a senior class that tallied 50 wins in four seasons.

But any freshman is due to deal with the shock of their first Ohio State training camp. Big time college football programs don't mess around and the Buckeyes are no exception. They push each player to their limit, and sometimes it takes a full season for an individual to get back on his own two feet and be ready to contribute.

"I think last year's class, that was part of the reason a lot of them didn't play. It took longer," Urban Meyer said in Chicago. "Same with the Eli's and Mike Thomas. Not necessarily Darron Lee, because he just didn't have the skillset yet."

Urban Meyer Embarking on a Fall Camp Unlike Any He's Ever Experienced

UrbanMeyerWatching.jpg

When a head coach is bringing a veteran team to fall camp, he can focus on fine tuning the areas where they may have struggled a year earlier. This was the case with Ohio State last year, as they looked to build on an already hefty foundation.

This year, however, they must first build the foundation. Replacing 16 starters is a tall order, and simply planning the days' practices has had Urban Meyer racking his brain for the best way to approach camp, which starts on Sunday.

"I have never spent this much time on practice schedules," he said. "People are laughing. I stare at that board for two hours a day. Every practice I’ve probably gone over five, six, seven times to make sure we’re getting everything accomplished."

When a head coach is trying to prepare an inexperienced team for what lies ahead, there is a lot of ground to cover. He must to decide which ground needs covered now, which ground can wait and which ground they have already walked.

"You have your situations like second-and-long plays, cluster formations, tight formations, you scrimmage those situations," Meyer explained. "Where in the past, Darron Lee had plenty of that, so we didn’t scrimmage those situations. Where I’m going through now and saying, ‘Okay, what other situations do we have? Okay, run game against zone pressures.'

"There’s guys on our offensive line that have never done that, so I have to create that. If you have 11 bodies going at it full speed in live situations, there’s a risk. So I’m trying to prioritize whether we have to get this situation or we don’t. And then you look at your schedule. Who do you play? We don’t play a two-tight Michigan State or Wisconsin style team until later on, so I’m evaluating do we do that? I’m just giving you examples of what goes through my mind to get them ready."
