2016 CFB Bowl Games Open Thread

At the risk of total thread derailment I provide the following:

I've been a Browns fan my whole life - hence the Xanax.

Browns first round draft picks since the return:

1999 1 Tim Couch * QB Kentucky
2000 1 Courtney Brown * DE Penn State
2001 3 Gerard Warren DT Florida
2002 16 William Green RB Boston College [23]
2003 21 Jeff Faine C Notre Dame
2004 6 Kellen Winslow II TE Miami (Florida) [24]
2005 3 Braylon Edwards WR Michigan
2006 13 Kamerion Wimbley LB Florida State [25]
2007 3 Joe Thomas OT Wisconsin [26]
22 Brady Quinn QB Notre Dame [27]
2008No Pick — — [27]
2009 21 Alex Mack C California [28]
2010 7 Joe Haden CB Florida
2011 21 Phil Taylor DT Baylor
2012 3 Trent Richardson RB Alabama
22 Brandon Weeden QB Oklahoma State
2013 6 Barkevious Mingo OLB Louisiana State
2014 8 Justin Gilbert CB Oklahoma State
22 Johnny Manziel QB Texas A&M
2015 12 Danny Shelton DT Washington
19 Cameron Erving C Florida State
2016 15 Corey Coleman WR Baylor

How many stars do you see on that list? Joe Thomas, Haden (maybe), Mack. It is too early to tell with Shelton, Erving and Coleman.

That is 6 out of 21. And besides maybe Weeden and Manziel, there was no outcry about any of these picks being a huge reach.

So.....my point was the Browns' inexplicable ability to pick a bust. It's almost a 6th sense.

That's all.

This always puts it in perspective for me; Think how outrageously good a front office would be to have picked 15 All Pro/stars out of 21 1st round picks.

I'm not sure it's ever been done.

The Browns (and I'm sure the Bengals) have defied those same odds, just to the negative side.

Amazing

Begging the boards patience, I just chose "since the return" (1999). They weren't exactly brilliant for years before then.

1984 18 Don Rogers S UCLA (great, 1st round Browns pick, not allowed to happen, so he had to die)
1985No Pick — — [15]
1986No Pick — — [16]
1987 5 Mike Junkin LB Duke - Massive bust
1988 21 Clifford Charlton LB Florida - Massive bust
1989 13 Eric Metcalf RB/WR Texas - Solid but not great
1990No Pick — — [19]
1991 2 Eric Turner DB UCLA - arguably great
1992 9 Tommy Vardell FB/RB Stanford - bust
1993 14 Steve Everitt C Michigan - solid but not great
1994 9 Antonio Langham CB Alabama - bust
29 Derrick Alexander WR Michigan - bust
1995 30 Craig Powell LB Ohio State - bust

So, in the previous 10 drafts, the first pick panned out 4 times, with only 2 that can be called "worth the pick" (IMHO)

That's just mean.. my therapist finally got me to let it go.. and then you bring it up again

You're probably going to go thru the Ted Stepien days too.. when we traded like 9 yrs of 1st round choices
Maybe we didn't want Charles Barkley, Stockton or James Worthy anyway

I seem to recall the Cowboys doing incredibly well in the draft year after year with Gil Brandt as personnel director. Then Jerry jones took over.

Gil lost his touch as the 80s wore on, as did Landry. Age gets us all eventually. Jimmy took over and built a championship team, then when he bailed Jerry took over and it went to shit for about 15 years.

Look at the Cowboys drafts in recent years. They're decidedly better. Coincidentally, or not, it began when Jerry put his son in charge and Stephen was smart enough to let scouts drive the player rating process. What a novel concept.

They damn near had to tackle Jerry to keep him from calling in "Johnny Manziel", though. Instead they took a boring guard, Zack Martin, who has been a Pro Bowl selection since his rookie year.

I'd posit it's harder to fuck up a 1st round pick that badly than it is to cash in on it.
