2016 CFB Bowl Games Open Thread

Hardly. Just people that realize the Browns are not a good football team and they haven't been for a day or two.

OP:

Do you mean future Cleveland Brown (and bust) Darnold?

What does this mean? I took it that anyone drafted by Cleveland will bust. So, what does the Browns not being a very good football team have to do with this? Bad teams draft players that turn out to be good all the time and turn their team around.

I just didn't understand the statement, I guess.

Rather than talking about the Buckeyes recent 31-0 shellacking did some research re: Saban's record in the SEC.

2007, Saban's 1st year, Alabama lost to GA by 3 / FSU by 6 / LSU by 7 / MSU by 7 / LA- Monroe by 7 / Auburn by 7. NCAA major violations ruling in 2009 would void all victories except 2.

2008 started 12-0 then lost to Urban's FL by 9 in the SEC championship and Utah by 7 in the Sugar Bowl. Utah was undefeated in 2008.

2009 14-0 NC.

2010 10-3 losing to South Carolina by 14 / by 3 to LSU / by 1 to Auburn.

2011 12-1 NC losing to LSU by 3 in OT, then defeating LSU 21-0 in the BCS championship.

2012 13-1 NC losing to Texas A&M by 5.

2013 11-2 losing to Auburn by 6 when Saban argued for a second to be put back on the clock for a FG attempt that was returned by Auburn for a td. Also losing to OK by 14 in the Sugar Bowl when the team probably phoned it in after the Auburn game.

2014 12-2 losing to Ole Miss by 6 and the Buckeyes by 7.

2015 14-1 NC losing again to Ole Miss by 6.

2016 14-0 awaiting the CFB championship game against Clemson. btw, Ole Miss actually was leading 'bama 24-3 late in the second quarter before losing 48-43 so a shout-out to Ole Miss. And no, I'm not trying to jinx Alabama, rather pointing out the incredible record of Saban the last (9) years.

And yes Saban gets the best recruits, but still an amazing accomplishment!

If Alabama wins it all Saban will have 6 NC. Only Bear Bryant will have more w/7.

>

Having said all this, hope Clemson wins it all ... in OT.

>

Also, because of the 2009 NCAA violation's ruling against 'bama their record in 2005 = 0-2 / 2006 = 0-7 / 2007 2-6 as mentioned above.

>

Oh yea, both Saban and Lou Holtz went to Kent State.

Saban was at Kent State on May 4, 1970, when National Guardsmen fired on a crowd of students

Kent State's Terrific Trio in '72 ~ Saban/Lambert/Pinkel.

I digress ...

At the risk of total thread derailment I provide the following:

I've been a Browns fan my whole life - hence the Xanax.

Browns first round draft picks since the return:

1999 1 Tim Couch * QB Kentucky
2000 1 Courtney Brown * DE Penn State
2001 3 Gerard Warren DT Florida
2002 16 William Green RB Boston College [23]
2003 21 Jeff Faine C Notre Dame
2004 6 Kellen Winslow II TE Miami (Florida) [24]
2005 3 Braylon Edwards WR Michigan
2006 13 Kamerion Wimbley LB Florida State [25]
2007 3 Joe Thomas OT Wisconsin [26]
22 Brady Quinn QB Notre Dame [27]
2008No Pick — — [27]
2009 21 Alex Mack C California [28]
2010 7 Joe Haden CB Florida
2011 21 Phil Taylor DT Baylor
2012 3 Trent Richardson RB Alabama
22 Brandon Weeden QB Oklahoma State
2013 6 Barkevious Mingo OLB Louisiana State
2014 8 Justin Gilbert CB Oklahoma State
22 Johnny Manziel QB Texas A&M
2015 12 Danny Shelton DT Washington
19 Cameron Erving C Florida State
2016 15 Corey Coleman WR Baylor

How many stars do you see on that list? Joe Thomas, Haden (maybe), Mack. It is too early to tell with Shelton, Erving and Coleman.

That is 6 out of 21. And besides maybe Weeden and Manziel, there was no outcry about any of these picks being a huge reach.

So.....my point was the Browns' inexplicable ability to pick a bust. It's almost a 6th sense.

That's all.

I see dead careers.
They walk around, they don't even know they're incompetent. And they are all Cleveland Browns.

I feel your pain!

ok, that's a lie as I totally gave up on the Browns after the Kosar era and really stopped caring one way or the other mid '70s. Plus the fact the Browns are no longer in Cleveland as they moved to Baltimore several years ago.

The force on diehard Brown's fans must be strong ...

We now return you to CFB Bowl season.

Oh yeah. I mean I obviously agree with that. They need to do waaaaay better in round 1. Nobody will debate that. Shelton definitely played at about a Pro Bowl level this year but I agree on everything you said in principle. I just think Darnold looks good; I'm no QB scout. I guess, in that sense, if we're going by the Browns' draft history, it means the Browns won't take him if he's any good. As a Browns fan who has never really seen them good besides maybe 2007, I just continue to have foolish hope that "this" is the year we start nailing our draft picks.

Ah well, don't want to derail, as you said.

Okey dokey.... One of the more bizarre exchanges I've been apart of. :slappy:

And it's not just draft picks when it comes to QBs. I don't think BP can afford the bandwidth to post a list of all the QBs the Browns have been through since 1999. I was impressed by Darnold, but if the kid ever ends up in Cleveland, he'll never be heard from again.

The last time the Buckeyes lost to Clemson in a bowl game they won the NC the following year. Just sayin'.

A+B=C ... simple math. And JT is prone to injury just like Braxton.

Who is/are going to be Ohio State's second and third string qb's next year?

Behind every cloud is a silver lining or as Judy Garland rephrased behind every cloud is another cloud!
