Game Thread 2015 Sugar Bowl: (1) Alabama vs. (4) Ohio State, Jan 1st @ 8:30p ET, ESPN (civilized thread)

Jones will not beat Alabama running the ball. That's all there is to it. Round 2 of Dak Prescott if Jones carries the ball. You want Elliott running the ball or Devin Smith catching the ball. Neither of those things happens when Jones runs.
Read option, based off of what you mentioned is that they will go after Elliot every time. I will gladly take 25 yard gains every play because you let Jones run all he wants. And then when you finally decide to start covering him, the long ball will be there.

While I slightly agree Jones is no Vince Young - he's no slouch either. I'd have little issue comparing his running style to Tebow. Your linebackers when dropping into coverage, should have it in their minds that he can (and will) pull it down.

Will Cardale get 10-15 yards? Probably not. A cheap 5-6? Yep.

If you "let" him run, i.e., just blow him off and not game-plan for him, he'll run right over you. However, I don't expect that, but rather the opposite in that Saban will put in proper game-planning for Jones' running. Also, I'd like top think our RB and WR corps are as good as, if not better, that Mississippi State's...

And TE and OL (I guess I'm not sure on thst, but just from recruiting alone and our coach I'd guess yes). You have to give he QB position to MSU if only due to having a new guy back there. But if it were JT I would say every position group is arguably better than MSU's.

The DL or middle linebacker will track him down in the backfield, at the LOS, or for a short gain. You can send your speed guys out with the motion. You don't have to game plan around his running ability because he is slow enough. His first steps are really slow. That's why Saban and co are going to get fancy with stunts and disguised coverages in the secondary. If Meyer thinks Jones running the ball is the best option then this is going to be fun to watch. If Jones beats Bama with his feet more power to him. We'll all see soon enough.

Agreed. Not at all looking for a Krenzel vs. Miami gameplan but I do see Jones making/extending a few plays with surprising mobility. tOSU WRs have been excellent in scramble drill situations...definitely an aspect to watch.

However, with nothing behind CJ, I'll be shocked to see him as a serious part of the running scheme.

Please tell me you forgot the sarcasm font.
No, actually, it wasn't sarcasm.

No coaches are surprised by this issue. If you read what Herman said, it's obvious that Ohio State is trying to get as much information as it can.

This whole issue is nothing other than the press trying to get into the minds of coaches and players to get some content. The idea is to impart importance to a rather silly issue, elicit comments from the coaches, and get fans riled up. It has failed.

You beat Alabama by scoring more points than they score....period.

Personally I don't care who carries the ball or catches the passes, just so Ohio State scores more points.

That I agree with: it's not how I took your earlier comment. I thought were were insinuating Smart was trying to get in the heads of the OSU coaches and players.

Thanks for the clarification!

Carsdale HAS to run the ball. Just not as much as the Miss St. QB did. He can hurt you with his legs just like he did against ILL, Maryland, scUm, and UW. He will take off if there is an open field in front of him.

One thing about Mississippi State here.

You've seen the old adage, "pass to open up the run." The Bulldogs offense clicked this year with a "run to set up the run." Without Dak being able to run, and run successfully, their running game never was able to get going in any game this year. In the games where Josh Robinson was able to break the 100 yard mark Dak rushed for close to twenty times. When Dak had no success, Robinson was very limited.
