2015-2016 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

The cupcakes-at-home approach maximizes revenue, gives the new players confidence and experience that comes from playing time, allows the coaches to assess what the new players can do under game situations, and is fun for fans who are curious about the new players, and want to follow their progress from the very beginning. What's not to like about all that? I think Coach Matta and AD Smith have a very sound plan.

Obviously the fans aren't very interested, or else the attendance would be much better. And of course having an embarrassing loss is a risk as well as we are seeing tonight.

Hadn't seen any of the hoops until today as I was on vacation last week, but watching the MSM game today you could see the sloppiness in the second half after a solid opening stanza. Obviously, the second half play carried over to UTA.

That said, it's a young team and very early in the season. Georgetown lost to Radford, Wiscy lost to Western Illinois - we're not the only ones trying to find their game in November. As is often the case, how the Bucks do in conference play will go a long way toward determining their season. I'm not ready to render a verdict on this season's squad after 2 games.

Agree 100% Jake. There will also be games this year where this team knocks off a team near the top of the BIG, and I won't be buying that either. It'll be interesting to see where they end up when March rolls around. I think they'll be on the NIT/NCAA bubble.

Not every freshman is a D'Angelo. tOSU has a lot of young 'uns on the court. Also there are not a lot of upper classmen to show the newbies 'tOSU way' on the court. Yeah, I know that is what coaches are for, but I'm a visual person, and it helps to see how it's done. Love to me is not pouting or sulking like he did coming back from last year's time out, and that is good. He needs to exhibit leadership on the court, which is something he didn't need to do with the senior class that was out there last year. I like the big men aggressiveness, wow. Not something I'm used to seeing (since JJ). tOSU needs to start pounding down low, instead of launching 3's from downtown. The last two losses shows that tOSU cannot hang with smaller, shoot-a-far teams. Matta will meld this team together once he finds a combination that clicks. Think of what we'll see in two years! Wow! (or at least I'm hoping). Go Bucks

I cannot see a thread for Jake Lorbach so I thought I would post this here. Really feel bad for him but it probably is best.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Jake Lorbach was the lone senior on a young Ohio State basketball team. He wouldn't have played much, being a former walk-on, but he would've had a role as a guy who's been around a while and seen Ohio State teams make long postseason runs.

Whatever knowledge he's gained in his years in Columbus can still be imparted to his younger teammates. But he won't get to play in those few moments that allow for coaches to empty their bench.

Thad Matta said on Monday that Lorbach, a product of St. Edward High School, won't play this season due to concussions. Matta said Lorbach suffered the third concussion of his career just before this season started.

"We're just gonna shut him down," Matta said. "He's still part of the team, but he's not even practicing with us now. He's at practice every day and he's a great kid."

Lorbach has been at every game, dressing in a sweatsuit for the season opener against Mount St. Mary's, and wearing a suit and tie for every game since. He ends a career that saw him play in 19 games over three seasons. He played in three games as a freshman on the team that made a run to the Elite Eight. Lorbach scored eight points in his career, including six against Bryant in the 2013-14 season.

Something to keep in mind, they didnt exactly lose to 3 complete "cupcakes". UT Arlington is doing well, and I'd say that's our worst loss, but heck they beat Memphis also and are 5-1 with their only loss to La Tech. La Tech, is likely tournament bound in my opinion, and they're still undefeated. As for Memphis, they have talent, and we took them to overtime, in a bit of a sorry game. Other than losing to UT Arlington, Memphis lost to close game to a good Oklahoma team. It's likely all 3 will be in post season tournaments.

Certainly not overlooking the fact that this is a major rebuild, and they won't beat Virginia tonight, and will be 2-4... but, brighter days are ahead. We've been spoiled with some team stars in the past, and this team just doesn't have one right now. I think they end the year at 15-16 or 16-15. Next year back to more of a 22-9 type season.

Just want to see some semblance of improvement and the losses will be no big deal. Can't keep seeing the chaos on both ends of the floor. A leader or two would be awesome if they develop.
