2014 tOSU Wide Receiver Discussion

Dontre doesn't need to bulk up all that much. His college comparison isn't Percy harvin, its deanthony Thomas of UO. As a junior, Thomas is around 180ish, and has used his speed and swiftness in space to make him successful, which dontre can do as well. Dontre doesn't need to get up to 200, he can be close to 190. Hes more of a combination of Jeff Demps and brandon James if one were to want to make comparisons to someone urban had at UF

Curtis samuel compares better to percy harvin, imo
All those players you named are basically the same player with very small differences between them ability wise. The only thing dontre has yet to show when comparing him to the others is more open field speed and home run ability. With speed and weight training dontre could reach those comparisons but he hasn't shown enough yet to be talked about at that level. Samuel has long legs and a fast stride which adds up to great open field speed. If he picks up the system quick I see him right in the mix at the pivot role.

Dontre was given as much as the staff believed he could handle. With the ball going through Carlos and then Braxton, there wasn't enough touches for dontre to get. But in flashes, he broke some decent runs, and being a decoy meant a lot to this offense at times as well. He definitely had opposing DCs up at night and you tell once he was put in any game throughout the season. He doesn't need so much weight, as he needs to learn the play book better, become a more complete football player instead of just an athlete. His open field speed is kind of high end as is his home run ability, IMO. In DAT's frosh year, he wasn't targeted as much as dontre seems to be. And isn't dontre running track as well, I could be mistaken, but they would also help with his speed as it has with DAT, and it did with demps and James. Samuel may have long legs and a fast stride, but he's also built thicker than dontre, but will still have the same issue that dontre did in his first year, blocking efficiently at the college level. And that may limit his minutes, compared to dontre and jalin who have had a full year in urban and Herman's system, and know what it takes to block to free up teammates since that's not something that's required of star players in high school

I recall Coach Meyer saying that Wilson wasn't physically ready to carry the ball inside every once in a while the way a guy like Harvin was. Because of that, it was fairly predictable what kind of plays would have to be used to get him the ball. That made him easier to defend, hence, fewer opportunities for "breaking the big one".

I don't know who it'll be, but out of those pivot guys I think the one that goes to the front of the class will be the one who most immediately becomes physically mature enough to carry the ball on occasional plays designed to go upfield inside the numbers.

Samuel is coming in 6 months earlier than dontre did. I can't speak for his work ethic but he is more college ready physically than dontre was coming in. I think Samuel has more home run speed than dontre does due to his longer strides, but until we see it on game days, it's all speculation. It doesn't matter what weight dontre becomes as long as marriotti turns him into the best athlete speed and power wise, for his body type and role in the offense. Wether that be 170, 190 or 210. You can't mention his name in that group of names mentioned earlier because he hasn't shown their big play ability yet. But he's yet to fill out so he will add some weight and gain speed because mickey's training system is second to none and I've yet to see many guys regress after going through it.

I think you can certain, put dontre in the same breath as James, demps and DAT. DAT was the only name with ridiculous stats his frosh year, the other 2 showed flashes their first years like dontre, and though they didn't get much bigger, they got in college football shape(due to Mariotti). Dontre's biggest asset last year was being a decoy and keeping defenses on their heels when he entered games. He showed flashes of being able to break big runs but got limited touches last year because he couldn't block, and didn't know the full play book. I have no doubt he can be a bigger threat next year, theres a reason every veteran player and coach had nothing but positive comments to say about dontre when he got on the field. He built almost a mythical status before the season started.

When he shows that elite speed that puts him in that category, I'll say it. De'anthony Thomas had 1200 total yards and 16 total TDs his freshman year. You can't put him in the category until he shows he can run away from people, which we have yet to see.

Wilson really impressed me with his ability to take what was there. For a frosh, he didn't dance around too much. There were a handful of plays that looked like no gainers that he turned into 5-10. On his couple touches against Clemson, which is an athletic D, he surprised me with how quick he could get up field. I'm not worried about the big play with him if he keeps doing that. We always have Devin Smith for the 50+ yard TD's.

Had the same thoughts. Got up field in a hurry.

2014 WR discussion? Corey Smith. I have heard too much positive from this guy toward the end of the year, as in he was the best receiver on the team during practice. He will have had a full year in the program to learn. He is already a few years removed from HS so he is college ready. I expect BIG things from him. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if he was our most productive WR next year. I expect this position group to have more competition for spots than we have seen out of any position group in the Meyer era by far. I expect the group to be much improved next year. I know we won't have our most productive guy in Philly Brown but as a group I expect a big step up in production and Corey to be right in the thick of it.

In fact if I were Devin Smith and Evan Spencer I would be working my butt of this offseason. Talk about a serious amount of talent coming up behind you. Michael Smith could finally have his moment. Jalin could bust on the scene. Dixon could have an immediate impact. Same for Curtis Samuel. If James Clark comes back healthy he could be in the mix. The point is that there is just too much talent now with this position group to not expect more. Urb loves competition and I expect him to fan the flames in a big way throughout spring. Bring it on baby. We need it bad. I've said it before but if the OL can just be adequate and Brax makes the same improvement he made last year I think the offense will be better.
