2014 tOSU Offense Discussion

Bob Hunter's Rumblings suggest that Joel Hale could be switching to the O-line:

That would surprise me unless they think he will be a starter (although I'm not positive that we want Hale starting at DT next year either). We have plenty of depth at guard, the only real concern depth-wise would likely be at tackle. Even then, I think that Decker, Baldwin, Dodson, Lisle, J. Jones, and Trout is pretty decent depth. As I said before, depth is not the concern so much as finding a talented starting 5 that gels well.

For the sake of discussion I would hope that Hunter somehow has him confused with Chase Farris. Hale has been serviceable at DT the last two years. Even if he is being passed over a bit by the depth chart I could see him making a solid contribution as the season plays out due to injuries, etc. Perhaps there is additional attrition on the OL that isn't known yet. Barring that, a move by Hale to a position that he has 0 experience at likely means he won't see the field for his senior year.

I would think the senior leadership element could be a factor if this turns out to be true, considering how young the O-line group is going to be. I think Urban (or Marotti) has mentioned Hale previously as a team leader, but he's kind of gotten lost in the shuffle on a deep O-line, so maybe it turns out to be a good fit.

I didn't want to bog down EzE's thread with talk about the RBs, but it seemed odd that so many are assuming that Rod Smith will be the 2ndstring RB or short yardage RB, and seem to forget about Brionte Dunn. In the lone year that Brionte played' he only had 7 less carris than Rod and had the same amount of TDs. Last year Rod had less carries than EzE and dontre, and barely saw the field. It seems that fans are more infatuated with Smith than the coaches have been. As much as I'd like to sling praise on him, there's not much to talk about as far as on field production. Brionte was redshirted because I'm sure the staff wanted him for the future and saw no PT for him last season, but sees an opening more this upcoming season. RBs will split up a lot of carries with not only Braxton though, but the hybrid players too. 12 different players carried the ball last season and 8 had over 100yds, 6 out of the 12 were RBs and Dontre was the only hybrid to get carries, I can see that number of hybrids increasing in 2014 as I'm sure we'll see guys like jalin Marshall and Curtis Samuel (and even Parris campbell if he doesnt redshirt)carrying the ball too with dontre.

It all falls on Miller's shoulders in my opinion. If he works extremely hard on his reads, learns to make faster more confident decisions, both in his passing and the option, the offense will be fine and the lack of experience surrounding him won't be as glaring. If he's indecisive, every weakness on the offense will be magnified.

For reasons that avoid the reasoning process I'd like to see Smith getting a lot of carries. He looks like the next Eddie George to me in terms of size, strength and stride. Of course ExE has most of those attributes too.

Truth is, I'm not worried about the offense half as much as I am about the back 7 on defense. Re-watching the Michigan, Michigan State and Clemson games has filled me with dread.

Talk about the forgotten man: What about Warren Ball? Literally no one is talking about him. I don't have on field production to point to but this guy sure seems to have the work ethic and desire. Wouldn't surprise me one bit to see him as the back up to Zeke.

He is the forgotten man, unfortunately. And even if you did have his stats, I don't believe in 2 seasons he had as many yards as EzE in one. But the fact that he's a forgotten player ions a testament to how strong our depth is at RB

He only played one season, he redshirted didn't he?

I think Ball is going to see some action but it just might be after Smith graduates. I think he will have a shot this year for sure and he may very well earn some carries, but his time might come in the 2015 season.

Then a different rod Smith better arrive this fall, because he was behind Ball, EzE and Dontre as last year progressed.
