2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

As far as matchups Oregon scares me the most. I think both teams score at will in that game and whoever makes the fewest mistakes wins. I think we lose that game. I think our defense has no trouble stopping Bama and holding them to under 20. Gives up 200 on the ground but keeps them to under 100 passing which I will take. We are really good at stopping the pass when they have one elite wr. I think we can put up 30 on any defense.

This may have already been broken out in some manner before, but not sure if detailed just how good the defense was if you take away those 4 big plays. Now, obviously you can't simply take away outliers in a game like football, but you can see how the defense played for a vast majority of the game. They had 63 offensive plays for 395 yards. 4 of those plays, or 6% of their plays, went for 244 yards, or 62% of their total yards. Their other 59 plays, or 94% of their plays, went for 151 yards, or 38% of their total yards. They averaged 6.3 yards per play. If you take out the outliers they averaged roughly 2.6 yards per play. That's pretty amazing. And yes, you can't ignore those plays, but that's pretty damn impressive.

Edit: if you hold a team to 1 or 2 explosive plays, you'll win most games. But if we allow 4 or 5 against a quality opponent, such as Wisconsin, it may be more difficult to overcome that.

The way I see it the defense got plenty of stops and was very successful at getting off the field in between those big plays.
Big plays are bad -- but we all knew there'd be some with this style of D... there's an argument that giving up 4 such plays to the likes of Indiana and Cinci is an issue.
Nonetheless, the issues in the last 2 games all boiled down to what happened with offense and special teams once the defense got off the field. The turnovers are huge. The self-sabotage scares me a lot more than anything else... it can keep shit teams with nothing to lose like TTUN in it.

This was the single worst football play I ever saw... which made it GREAT. Pure ineptitude. A zero-yard pick six. Loved it.

To the best of my current knowledge, one big play was due to a pass blitz on a running play (high risk high reward defense), one was due to a bad angle from a safety, and one was due to a quarterback scrambled (which is always a roll of the dice). My takeaway is to hope the angles will improve a little after this experience.

This defense, on a bad day, should handle scUM.

I have been having nightmares where, next week, Mel Gordon gets the single game rushing record back and wins the Heisman. And then we all say, "Except for those 5 80-90 yard runs we contained him pretty good."

It's just a bad dream. That couldn't happen.

Powell runs hot and cold a little too much. Some of the angles he takes are mind boggling. On that 90 yard run he looked like he was almost purposely slowing down and taking a terrible angle as if he were afraid of contact. Then on other plays he sticks his nose right in there and makes the play. Reminds me a bit of Barnett as far as consistency, or lack thereof.

So far this is spot on in this game as well. IMO put him closer to the LOS so he doesn't have to worry about angles since he's already where you want him to be instead of sprinting 10 yards to worry about it.

Same recycled arguments every week. We are what we are at this point, which is not a championship caliber defense. We are better at pass defense this year but it's come at the expense of the run defense. We've gotten progressively worse as the year has gone on.

I hope this is just growing pains in Year 1 of a defensive system and not what we should expect from a Chris Ash defense. We are going to need beastly Front 7 play going forward if this is his scheme (DBs not involved vs the run).

The one game last year I felt we sold out to stop the run was wisconsin and pretty much we did stop them. That has to be the case again next year. With JT down this game will truly boil down to who can stop the run and at this point sadly id have to give them the nod.

Stave isn't a terrible QB, he is mobile, and can throw the ball. After today's win, and the loss of JT, I think the Wisky game simply comes down to time of posession. We don't know what we have in Cardale, but we do know that he is going to be limited - he simply doesn't have the experience or the practice reps. One week of 1st team prep doesn't solve that problem. I don't see us scoring effiencly against the Wisky defense.

Our defense is inconsistent. Hot and cold. I think we struggle against Wisky's offense b/c Stave's ability to run & throw gives them enough balance to be real dangerous, which will be a huge challenge for our D. We cannot go 3 and out on offense too often and wear this D out. Game over at that point.

I believe we're better than Wisky, we should win, but we have some big challenges going into the game.

Stave is not mobile. Like at all.
