Exactly man! Incredibly young defense but they are improving each week, I cannot ask/expect much more. I will be the first to critique our defense when they do not perform. However, I feel that was the best defense I have watched give up 24 points here. In this era, 20 points or less is a great showing regardless of the opponent. Factor in that Maryland is a damn good offense and I think we had a great performance when it mattered. I will have to rewatch the film but I really do think the defense made a huge step today in improving and getting closer to the Silver Bullets of yore.

the young DBs are growing almost as fast as tOSU QB. Happy to see it, they will be a force for the next 2 years (after this one). What I am not seeing is the other freshmen, Erick Smith, etc getting in the game. Probably miss it, but the 2's need the experience and 'being blooded'. Hate to see the DBs being beaten, but not as much as playing fifteen yards off the line and giving up the continuous bubble screens as the opposing team marches down the field. draw the line in the sand and say come get me - if you can. This is a fun season to watch. Go Bucks!

If not for another play over 50 yards given up I would've said it was a great performance but as it is ill say it was a good effort.

The tackling was excellent. As was the coverage and one thing I thought of that hurt us is how good our offense was.

What I mean was our offense moved quickly against Maryland and that combined with multiple defensive INT/returns set up for the defense to put back on the field a lot. My god though is this giving up big plays every game get tiring. Like Urban said they seem to be slowly disappearing...

Very happy with how defense has progressed so far.
Seemed like they turned the corner in the 2nd half of VTech game when it came to getting off the field on 3rd down.
Another problem seemed to be giving up scores right before halftime, so I was happy with Lee's interception and then a 3-and-out both under the 2min mark.

One thing I always forget to keep in mind is that, unlike last year, Ohio State has been up against some pretty decent offenses. Navy's going to finish the year ranked #1 in rush offense, Gunner Kiel is probably going to throw for a million yards, and Maryland should have a pretty good offense as well. VaTech isn't an offensive juggernaut by any means but everyone here knows Brewer played the game of his life. It happens. This is in stark contrast to last year where Cal put up the second most points they did all year against the Buckeye defense.

I think we can all (except for the loonytoon Fickell haters) agree that this year's defense is an improvement from last year, but there is still a ways to go. I feel pretty positive about that, as it is the younger players who need the most improvement, and I feel like they are getting the coaching they need for the most part.

A very good point. Whereas we made the most inept of offenses look elite last year, every week I have seen marked improvement and an unmistakable Silver Bullet mentality. We've essentially played the best offenses on the schedule sans MSU and held up well. Obviously we have a ways to go still, but a ton of credit to the entire defensive staff. The DL looks as billed and is starting to adjust to life without Spence well (kudos LJ Sr). The LBs are much improved...not many missed tackles, they are playing downhill and aggressive, not a liability on pass defense, and they seem to be in the right place at the right time...Perry has improved night and day, Grant is solid, Lee is playing incredibly well as a freshman, and The Chef is coming along nice (kudos Fickell). The DBs started off tough but they are playing very aggressive, improving every week, and you can see the great talent back there...we are starting to blow up bubble screens and nothing is given up easily (kudos Ash/Coombs). And then the special teams has really been incredible, namely the coverage...we shut down Diggs and that is no easy task (kudos Coombs).

That was beautiful. One time we blitzed and they threw right into the screen...if Grant didn't get through the blocks and blow that up, it would have went a long way.

Tough offenses? Navy, on average, has rushed for less yards against non-OSU opponents. I just don't see it.

Here are the NCAA total offense stats through this week. It looks pretty weak to me.
