2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

Let's take a look at some defensive rankings for this year's D (per ESPN as of the first half of tonight's game)

Total Yards: 1262yds (15th)
per Game: 316 (23rd)

Pass Yards: 650 (9th)
per game: 162 (14th)

Rush Yards: 612 (53rd)
per game: 153 (65th)

Points: 80 (26th)
per game: 20 (32nd)

Draw what conclusions you may wish, but even after the weak opponents we've played these numbers aren't really all that bad.

Sure we don't have an elite overall D, but what we have is quite serviceable if the offense is clicking.

The rush yards are concerning because this should be the best defensive line in CFB. Need moar sacks from Bennett and Adolphus.

Week 1, OSU's average was 370 rushing yards allowed
Week 2, OSU's average was 247.5 rushing yards allowed
Week 3, OSU's average was 180.6 rushing yards allowed
Week 4, OSU's average was 153 rushing yards allowed
Week 5, OSU's average was 135.6 rushing yards allowed

Outside of Navy and Virginia Tech, no team has rushed for more than 100 total yards. Only Navy had a 100 yard rusher and he rushed for 118.

Navy is the deviation not the norm, but that outlier was enough to severely skew the statistic.

Our defense this year compares pretty favorably to that of the 2010 Auburn Tigers.

Thanks Maryland is correct, some really poor passing made our D look a lot better than it really is...

A lot of the "poor passing" was due to the QB getting walloped as he threw the ball...we are forcing the QBs we face to throw way earlier than they want to throw the ball and that is just good defense.

Regardless of giving up 24 points, they came at inconsequential times and against a very good offense. For the most part, we were aggressive, physical, and dynamic imo. Really good game called by Ash and we look like a very good defense right now. Plenty of talent and they are starting to believe in the new scheme it seems.

MSU
#31 Scoring Defense.
#11 Total Defense
#4 Rushing Defense This sticks out but OSU's number(49th) could be weird because of playing Navy.
#47 Passing Defense/Yards Allowed

Better every week. :lift:

It was great watching Apple get that interception! And McMillen's pick six! And Lee's interception.
Who got number 4?

Grant. Missed a pick six by millimeters. Just stepped out at the three.
Don't forget Lee in the fourth when he jumped a route and leaped to make the INT only to have go though his hands...would've been an easy pick six.
